“I’m so sorry,” she rushed to say.

“Me too.”

Her eyes glistened, and his throat tightened as he nodded and looked away. He wasn’t used to girls crying on him. Growing up with brothers, and now working and living surrounded by guys, tears weren’t too commonplace.

A tiny sparrow hopped along the deck’s wooden rail, pecking at invisible crumbs. “Those cookies were pretty good.”

“I’m glad.”

Silence stretched. The sparrow flew away in a rush of brown feathers, like it sensed the awkwardness here.

“Daniel?”

He glanced at her.

“I’m trying to accept things.” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “But it still feels like it’s my fault.”

He lowered himself into a white Muskoka chair. “So, you intended to crash the car?”

The green eyes widened. “Of course not.”

“Did Stephen?”

“How can you say such a thing?”

“Was it an accident?”

“Well, yes, it was raining, but if I hadn’t insisted we go to the party, and if we hadn’t been arguing, he’d still be here.” Her bottom lip trembled. “I can’t get away from that.”

Compassion filled him afresh. He dragged the chair closer, leaned forward, and touched her arm. “Sarah, it was an accident. And even if it wasn’t, is anything too hard for God to forgive?”

She bit her lip, those big green eyes searching him. “No,” she whispered.

“I—” He swallowed, memories taunting his convictions. “I know it’s hard, but God promises to help us. We can trust Him.”

She nodded. “I was reminded of that earlier.”

His heart softened a fraction more. He settled back in his seat, listening to the hush of the spruce in the breeze. The hammock’s faded ropes protested as she shifted.

“Dan?”

“Yeah?”

“I really am sorry about before. I know I get a little carried away sometimes.”

He lifted an eyebrow.

“Okay, maybe a lot carried away.” She sighed. “I know I can get pretty emotional.”

“Really?”

Her lips lifted at his tone. “And believe it or not, I don’t actually like being this way.”

He shot her a look filled with skepticism.

“I don’t!”

His lips twitched.
