“I’m not.” He shifted his fingers to graze hers again in another nerve-tingling moment.

Sarah stared at him, green eyes wide as clouds of color boomed above to the cheers of the crowd surrounding them. But as she slowly smiled that gorgeous smile, it made him feel like he was the only person in her world.

And that maybe one day soon she’d reconsider that “only a good friend” comment.

Chapter 13

Rob waved at Sarah as he and Jason pulled out of Dan’s drive to head back to Toronto. “I’ll call you sometime!”

“Bye!” Sarah waved and turned to catch Dan rolling his eyes. “What? Think he won’t?”

“History tells me.”

“Out of sight, out of mind?”

“Pretty much.” He shrugged, hands in the back pockets of his cargo shorts.

“Oh well.”

“You don’t sound too disappointed.” His eyes—dark, intense—watched her carefully.

“Nope. He’s not really my type.”

“Really? He isn’t?”

His overly innocent expression and tone drew her chuckle. “There’s no need for you to sound so smug.” Sarah shoved him off the step.

His dimples deepened. “There’s no need for violence.”

Sarah laughed. “I’m going.”

“Speaking of going, I was, uh, wondering…” He glanced down and swallowed.

Sarah stared at him. Mr. Cool, Calm, and Collected was nervous?

Dan looked up again. “Do you want to go out for dinner?”

Oh! Her heart skipped a beat. Could he really mean—“As in…?”

His cheeks reddened. “As in, if you’re needing dinner and want to go out and have some with me sometime, that’d be really nice.”

“Oh.” Yes! Who cared about going back to Australia or any other complication this could bring? “Are you asking me out on a date?”

His lips twitched up at the corners. “I’ve been told you might be open to dates.”

“As long as they’re not pity dates.”

“Definitely not a pity date.”

At that husky note in his voice, her tummy turned over. She worked to rein in the big smile she could feel slowly blooming across her face. “In that case, I think I’m definitely needing dinner.”

“Tonight?” Hope filled his eyes. “Pick you up at six?”

He was so keen! Another thrill rippled through her. “I’d better go get ready, then.”

“See you soon.”
