“Don’t you dare speak on things you do not understand. These are my people, and I am their rightful ruler. This power was always meant for me. And now, I will open the portal to the human realm and take over both worlds. I would have done so centuries ago, but I knew that the true Enchantress with the distinct power would be waiting on the other side. I had to wait until you came to my realm, where I could rid of you once and for all.”

As she spoke, I knew that no matter what I said, she wouldn’t stop. The Dark power had gone to her head and there was no changing her mind. Maybe if the Divines had shown up hundreds of years ago, there would have been a chance. She would have still wanted to save her land. But now, I knew the only way this would end was when one of us was dead.

“The only flaw in your plan, I won’t just hand over the human realm. I won’t allow you to corrupt more of our people.”

Her boisterous laugh expelled out of her with no remorse for the terrible things she had done. “And how will you fight, when the ones you love have turned on you?”

As she spoke, Eli stepped forward, and I knew that Knox’s worst fears were about to come true. And suddenly, I realized that Eli’s death may be the only thing that stopped the destruction of both my worlds.

Chapter Thirty

Knox

As Willow finished speaking, the thousands of Divines at her back shifted, and I knew this was it. Visions flashed before my eyes, the fate of the hundreds of Divines at my back settling in my mind. No matter which future my brain landed on, some of our people would die. All I could hope was that when this all ended, they wouldn’t all be dead, me among them.

“Attack.” Willow whispered, barely audible, and yet each Dark Divine listened, snarling and growling as they began to charge.

Readying myself for the incoming forces, I closed my eyes, knowing I saw betterseeingwith my mind. I grabbed the sword that I had stashed at my side, holding it up high as the visions bombarded me. A Drax with his fangs bared rushed at my right, but I was a second ahead of him, my sword swiping his head clean off his body before he could see what reached him.

To my left, a wolf Shifter stormed me, jaws wide and ready to bite down. However, with a swift turn, my sword was hilt deep in its side, their howl of death echoing in my ears. More and more shadowed creatures came at me, each of them meeting the same demise. None of them could catch me off guard, my mind always one step ahead.

Suddenly, a new vision flashed in my mind, Maeve trapped beneath the claws of a lion shifter. Her sword was stabbing repeatedly, but the creature wouldn’t budge, digging deeper and deeper into her flesh. Snapping my eyes open, I spotted Maeve across the field, the lion Shifter prowling closer to her, ready to lunge.

Sprinting as fast as I could, I threw my body in front of Maeve, one claw slicing across my chest, before I buried my sword in its chest. With a mewl, the lion fell to the ground, its chest heaving as it gave its last breath. Maeve sat at my back, tumbling with the pressure of the lion’s leap. Both of us breathing heavily as we watched with wide eyes as the lion shifted back to her human form. The shadows dissipated, as if death was the only release from its grip.

“Thank you.” The woman muttered, staring me in the eyes.

My chest ached as I remembered who these Divines we were fighting truly were. They were simply people that had been trapped in the Darkness for centuries. And now they were finally free, death their only salvation.

“Knox,” Maeve screamed, breaking me out of the woman’s trance.

Turning to look where she was, I watched as a pack of wolves surrounded us. Closing my eyes once again, I waited for their attacks. Picking Maeve up off the ground, I instructed her to grab her sword, knowing it would take both of us to get out of this.

“Maeve, to your right.” I ground out, hearing the metallic clink of her sword as it met one of the wolf’s bones.

In front of me, another wolf lunged, ending on the tip of my sword, their life bleeding out of them on impact. Back-to-back, Maeve and I fought, each wolf transitioning to their human form as they died, relief in their eyes.

When the pack was gone, I turned Maeve around by her shoulders, needing to make sure she was okay. There were several scratches along her arms and face, but nothing that wouldn’t heal.

“Are you okay? The others need my help.” I told her hurriedly, the visions of more Dark Divines attacking volleying in my mind.

Nodding, Maeve’s eyes were wide with shock, but her future wasn’t in any imminent danger, so with one last check, I left her, charging towards the corner of the fight where my dad stood, surrounded by dozens of Drax. Willow was smart in her attack method, sending the large groups of attackers towards our passive abilities.

Sprinting again, my breaths became heavy, as the cut on my chest continued to spill blood. The lion’s claws had dug deep, reaching through my muscle and I knew I wouldn’t last long with my current blood loss.

Feet away from my father and the other Seers, I watched in horror as a Drax sprinted forward, ripping into his neck with no strength held back.

“Dad!” I screamed, racing to his side, and stabbing the Drax through the heart. My dad and the Drax both fell in a heap as I slid to my knees at his side, tears pricking my eyes.

“No, Dad, no. You can’t do this. Mom needs you. I need you.” I pleaded, watching as the blood continued to spill from his throat, his breaths spurting through the blood.

Lifting my head, I frantically searched the crowd, hoping to spot Halley. She was my only chance to save my father. The only way I wouldn’t lose the most important man in my life. My dad’s chest continued to slow, his breathing labored, and I closed my eyes, begging to see a miracle in my future. As if answering my prayers, a flash of red spotted in my vision before I cracked them open and saw Halley before me.

Crouched before my dad, she reached her hands out, the glow emanating from her palms and flowing into him. I could see the strain in her face as she worked to heal the wound on his neck. Gripping my neck, I begged that it wasn’t too late. That I wouldn’t lose him before I had the chance to save him.

After several quick moments, that felt more like hours, Halley pulled her hands away, Dad coughing as he sat up. Checking his neck, I realized the wound had healed and he was no longer bleeding. She had saved his life.

“Thank you, Halley. You saved my life.”
