She eyes her gran. “I’m almost thirty.”

“Which is why I’ve been doing my best to keep her off your tracks.” Then her gaze shifts to me. “She’s not going to like him. I do. He’s perfect for you, Sid.”

“Vic!”

I rub a hand over my face. Inside, my heart’s fucking jumping about for some reason. I ignore it. “Sidney’s worried the mafia is after her. After you too. And I gotta say, I’m concerned too.”

“He wants to put me in another cage,” Sidney says, her hands grasping the other. “Like I can’t think on my own.”

“It’s not like that, Princess. I want to keep you safe.”

“Time out,” Vic says with a quiet sort of command. “That’s an issue with you two. I’m here because it’s all hush-hush and not in the papers. Your politician and Eddie? They brought their little house of cards down on themselves. Deals are being made for bigger fish, so until it’s time, it won’t be anywhere, but what you saw? Apart from it, maybe getting a little interest had nothing on this.”

I frown and straighten. “How do you know this, Mrs. Thompson?”

“Comes from a good life with friends in high and low places.” Then she laughs. “You’re good to go, Sid.” Vic’s gaze flicks to me. “If there’s nothing holding you here.”

I’m about to say something right when Sidney starts up.

But that’s all blown to shreds by my brother opening my door.

He’s got one hand in the collar of that Vince guy.

Vic stands and fans herself. “Oh my. There are two of them?”

“Gran.”

“He’s got to be one of your mom’s, like that ratty man.”

Now, I laugh. “I called him a fuckin’ rat man. Lawson, you caught yourself a fish. Lawson, this is Victoria Thompson, Sidney’s gran.”

“Vic,” she says.

I narrow my eyes.

“Vic.” Lawson gives me a shit-eating grin, the prick. He knows since I’ve been all getting down with Sidney, I’ve been delegated Mrs. T, not Vic. Asshole that he is. “And yes, Mack, I’ve been fishing. Easy pickings, too, since he was at your car.”

“Not the Jag.”

“You have a Jag?” Vic says. “Call me Vic.”

“I’m leaving,” mutters Sidney. But she doesn’t move.

I think she’s as fascinated as I am by what’s going on.

“Let go of me,” Vince says, trying to pull free.

This isn’t a smart move, considering he’s trying to pull free of the sheriff.

“Nah,” Lawson says, “don’t believe I will. Don’t take kindly to you trying to cause trouble. Don’t take kindly to you messing with my brother’s things, or his woman’s. Looked you up out there. Got some arrests already under your belt. Seems you’ve done some work for Eddie Manoli. Low level. Got caught. Now, you’re set up as a PI? Got some fancy threads, bilk rich ladies? Like Sidney’s mama? All while working your agenda.”

The man looks sullenly at the ground.

“Miss anything? I’m thinking you were gonna try and hand her to Eddie? Am I right?”

Vic looks at Lawson. “He missed the boat there. Eddie’s going down.”

“Your Jag’s all right, Mack. He didn’t get into your garage. He did break into Danny’s though, and caught him at Christine, though what he wanted with that beast is anyone’s guess.”
