“Christine?” Vic asks.

“Sidney named the vehicle I gave her while her car’s out of commission,” I say.

“It’s possessed,” Sidney says with a shudder.

Lawson lets the guy go. He pulls out his pad and pen. “Wanted to know if you two want to press more charges?

Vince charges Sidney, lunging.

I pull her out of the way and punch him hard, knocking him down and back onto my coffee table, which splinters under him. “He owes me a new coffee table.”

There are people at my door, and Leland, Forrest, Isaac, and Philip burst in, looking for heads to bust.

“Town grapevine,” I say to Vic.

Vince stirs, and Callahan puts a boot on him, keeping him down.

“As your lawyer, I can see he provoked you.”

Vince weakly says, “Thanks.”

“Not you, asshole,” says Leland. “I’m talking to Mack.”

“You want to redecorate?” Isaac asks. “London will help.”

“I draw the line at a pink house,” I say.

“I was thinking,” says Isaac, cracking knuckles, “that we could toss him at more furniture.”

“Sounds like a plan.” Forrest flexes his muscles, and Vic almost swoons.

I point at Isaac. “Shouldn’t you be with Rose?”

“I was needed here.”

“You, sir,” says Lawson to the grounded Vince, “are under arrest, again. Under a whole lot of different charges to be worked out at my leisure. But try and touch Sidney again, and I’ll let my brother have some time spelling out those charges. In details. With his fists.”

Suddenly Vic comes up and kicks the guy hard. “That’s for trying to attack my granddaughter. Your boss is going down, buddy. And your PI business is done. I’d be more concerned with running far away so you don’t get made a fall guy.”

The room erupts into shouts, and Sidney buries her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking, and I’m pretty sure she’s laughing.

“I love this chaos,” Vic says. “And this town.”

“Hey, Princess.” I pull Sidney to me. “You okay?”

“I’m still mad, but this is . . . this is funny.”

Damn. I could fall for her. Right here. Right now.

Vic comes up and puts a hand on both our arms. “Snuggle later, or whatever. But I meant they found me, and your parents tracked where I was headed. Here.”

Sidney goes still. “What are you saying, Gran?”

“That your mom is on her way.”
