Page 36 of One Night in Alaska

Beau hummed the song the man had been playing on the ukulele. I turned and smiled at him. “What’s the name of that song?” I asked him. “It seems like they’re always playing it in the movies.”

“It’s called ‘Aloha ‘Oe,’” he explained. “It was written by Princess Lili’uokalni. It was actually written as a farewell song, but since most of the lyrics are in Hawaiian, most people don’t realize that.”

“I had no idea. Wow, you’re so smart. How did you know that?” As impressed as I was with the views out the window, I was even more impressed with the man in front of me. Not only was he unbelievably good-looking, but he was also a genius as well.

I noticed color creeping into Beau’s cheeks at the compliment. “I’ve been here a few times.”

I grinned at him, slightly jealous that I couldn’t say the same, but I was looking forward to many more trips to the islands. Thoughts of having the opportunity to come back here with him made my stomach tighten. We hadn’t known each other that long, but I had known he was special from the start.

We drove through a few smaller towns before we reached a bigger city. Traffic was crazy here, but the views more than made up for waiting on slower drivers or sitting at lights. Eventually, we wound our way out of that city, too, and headed toward a smaller village.

“Almost there,” Beau proclaimed with a wide smile.

Off in the distance, I saw an area with some large homes situated on the side of a mountain. “Is that where we are going?” I asked him.

Beau nodded. “That’s it.”

I shouldn’t have been too surprised considering how beautiful his home in Alaska was. “Amazing.”

We pulled through a gated community and went over some rises in the ground to the back of the subdivision. There, we were on the other side of the mountain, and the ocean spread out in front of us. I gasped at the breathtaking view. The lush green mountains covered with emerald vegetation behind us and the sparkling ocean in a gorgeous shade of blue met the sky in front of us. I couldn’t imagine anything more breathtaking even in my most thrilling dreams.

The car pulled up to a large house situated a few hundred yards back from the beach. The home itself was two stories tall, made mostly of glass, with plenty of flowers and tropical plants as landscaping. I didn’t think it was quite as large as the house in Sitka, but it didn’t matter. Behind it, I could see the mountains, which meant this home had a spectacular view of both the ocean and the high ground all around. I couldn’t get my seatbelt unbuckled fast enough.

Tearing out of the car, I ran toward the front door to peer inside the window. I felt like that little girl in that movie who asked Santa Claus for a house for Christmas and made her parents stop on the side of the road when she saw the perfect one.

“Well, I guess you’re in a hurry to get inside,” Beau said, coming up behind me. He punched a code into the door, and I pushed it open, flying inside.

The rooms were large and open. I could see all the way to the back of the house from the entryway, even though it was a large space. Huge sliding glass doors invited me outside to the pool and, beyond that, the lush green space. The furniture fit the island perfectly with light-toned woods and woven fabrics in tropical prints. Even the little touches, like a glass dolphin on an end table or the painting of a palm tree on the wall by the door, made this place feel warm, inviting, and like paradise.

I couldn’t help myself as I ran from room to room, checking everything out. Beau watched me go, standing in the same spot with his hands buried in his pockets, rocking back and forth and chuckling softly. The kitchen was just as modern as the one at Beau’s other house with upgraded appliances and plenty of counter space. The dining room was large enough for the whole family to gather around, even if there were plenty of children. I could see families renting this space for the perfect holiday.

Rushing upstairs, I checked out each of the five bedrooms. Most of them had private ensuite bathrooms, though two of the rooms had a Jack and Jill. It was easy to find the master. It had a spectacular view of the ocean on one side and the mountains on the other. There was even a view from the shower.

When I came out of the bathroom, Beau was standing in the doorway, smiling at me. “Do you like it?”

“I love it!” I hurried over to him and wrapped my arms around his neck. “I can’t believe I get to stay here. I can’t believe you own it!”

He laughed. “I can’t believe I own it either,” he admitted. “Would you like to go see the ocean?”

I couldn’t think of anything I’d rather do, except for maybe test out this mattress with Beau, but I could hear people downstairs and imagined they were bringing in our luggage. “That sounds awesome,” I told him.

He took my hand and led me downstairs. We crossed the soft grass and walked into the sand, and I had to pause to remove my sandals. The sand was soft and warm beneath my bare feet, like satin as we moved toward the water.

Out in the distance, there was a reef of some sort, whether natural or manmade, that caused the waves to break before they reached the shore. Watching the water come surging in and then seeing it spray over the top of the reef was exhilarating while the waves that rolled ashore were calm and soothing. I loved the sound of the ocean as it mingled with the sway of the palm trees and the call of the birds that circled overhead. Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath of the salty, crisp air. This was most definitely paradise.

Beau took my hand, and I opened my eyes to look into his. The only thing that might distract me from staring at the amazing landscape was this perfect man. Together, we moved forward until the water reached our ankles. He was right—it was a little chillier than I’d anticipated, but it felt good with the warm sun shining down on us. I could see myself slipping into my bathing suit and getting used to it pretty quickly.

Looking around, I didn’t see another soul. “Is this a private beach?” I asked him.

“Technically, there are no private beaches in Hawaii. Anyone can come to any beach. But not a lot of people live around here, and those that do are probably working this time of day. Most of the tourists stick to the more popular beaches, so we’ll probably have this place to ourselves most of the time.”

That made me smile. I could see the two of us sitting out here beneath a full moon, sipping a beer, holding hands, and seeing where that led us.

“I can’t believe how clear and clean the water is,” I muttered, looking down at tiny fish swimming around my feet.

“It is beautiful,” he agreed. “So are you. Georgia, would you like to go out with me tonight, to someplace special?”

Grinning at him, I said, “I would love that.” I didn’t even care where he wanted to take me. As long as I was with Beau, I was in paradise.
