“Actually,” he began, that sly smile on his face again, “I brought a picnic.”

Raising an eyebrow, I stared at him for a long moment. “What’s that now?”

“Yeah, I brought a picnic for us. It’s below deck. I’ll go get it.” He got up, and I let him go, but I was shocked. Why in the world would Beau do something like that? He was thoughtful and often made plans for us that both thrilled and surprised me, but this was a first.

I sat as patiently as I could, waiting for him to emerge. When he came back with a picnic basket and a blanket, I had a feeling something unusual was about to happen. I wasn’t sure why the picnic made me think that way, but Beau was acting a bit strange, like he was giddy or nervous about something, so I had a feeling this might be an even more special occasion than before. But I wasn’t sure what it might be. Had he acquired a new property he wanted to surprise me with? Were we leaving earlier than anticipated for our next trip? I didn’t know, and I didn’t want to ask, so I went with it.

Beau spread the blanket out, and we both sat down before he opened the picnic basket. Inside, he had fried chicken, potato salad, homemade biscuits, butter, and chocolate cake, as well as champagne.

“Wow, you sure thought of everything,” I told him. “I’m impressed.”

He fixed me a plate and handed it over. “Well, you’re a pretty special person, Georgia. I wanted to do what I could to make today special for you.”

“Why is that?” I asked him. “What’s special about today?”

He smiled and shrugged. “I don’t know. Every day I spend with you is special.”

That was sweet and caused a tear to form in my eye. We ate and chatted about work, the scenery around us, and lots of other topics as the sun began to set. I loved how Beau and I could talk about anything and everything, and we never got bored of one another or found it difficult to think of something to say.

“Would you like a piece of cake?” he asked me.

“I’m stuffed,” I told him, but I could see he was slightly disappointed. I didn’t even know where the food had come from yet, but I had a feeling he’d picked it up at one of the local restaurants. I thought I would’ve noticed if he’d gotten up in the middle of the night to fry chicken and bake a cake. “Okay, sure,” I told him. “I’ll have a small piece.”

Beau grinned and cut me a piece of cake, but before he handed it to me, he put a cloche over the top of it, which I thought was unusual.

When I pulled the top off, I saw why he’d wanted me to eat the cake. On top of my slice was a beautiful diamond ring.

Gasping, I almost dropped the plate. My hands were shaking as I looked at the jewelry. “Is that…”

He didn’t answer me. Instead, he plucked the ring from the cake and said, “Georgia Mattingly, I love you more than anything.” I set the plate down as he got on one knee. “You are the most amazing woman I’ve ever known in all my life. In every way, you complete me, and I can’t imagine my life without you. Will you marry me?”

Without hesitation, I said, “Yes, of course, I will, Beau!”

Our lips connected as our hearts joined as one. He was my man, and I was his woman forever. Nothing could ever come between us again—nothing.
