“Why don’t you shower here?” I suggested. “It’s stupid to dress to go next door to undress.”

“Can I use your robe?” she asked.

“Yes.”

I grabbed the robe from the back of the door and wrapped her in it before escorting her to her room. She insisted she could shower and dress on her own. While she did that, I went back to my room and opened my shaving kit. I pulled out the velvet bag my mother had given me two weeks ago.

I pulled out the ring that had once been on my grandma’s finger and was passed down to my mother. It had started out as a speck of a diamond. As my father started to earn more money, he added on to the ring. The stone in the middle was still the original and it was surrounded by perfect, dainty diamonds.

My mother thought it was perfect. I wanted to give Macy something that had true meaning, not just monetary value. The ring was a part of my family, which meant whoever wore it was part of the family. My mother was ready to welcome her into the family with open arms.

I put it back in the bag for safekeeping. I escorted Macy up to the pool deck and retrieved breakfast for her. After, I insisted on a trip to the doctor. She tried to argue, but it was futile.

“She’s okay?” I asked again.

“The bruises are expected,” the doctor said. “Her lungs are clear, the heart sounds good, and there are no signs of concussion. I think a few bruises is pretty lucky.”

“I told you I was fine,” Macy said. “Now, I’m going swimming.”

“Can she?” I asked the doctor.

He smiled. “She’s very capable. The water will help those stiff muscles.”

“You’re sure?”

“Ignore him,” Macy said with a laugh. “I had no idea he was a worrying hoverer.”

I escorted her back to the pool deck with the intention of watching her like a hawk. It soon became clear I was not needed to watch over her. Once some of the ladies saw her, they immediately zeroed in and were fawning over her.

“I guess I’ll go take care of a few things,” I said. “I’ll be back. If you need anything—”

“I’m fine,” she said again.

I left her alone and found a couple of my staff I trusted to keep my secret. The captain had a few of the free crew members filling balloons with helium. I gave some input before disappearing into the galley to talk with the chef. Once I was convinced everything was set up, I rejoined her at the pool.

“Are you going to get in?” she asked from the pool.

I shook my head. “Not today.”

“Ah, come on,” she teased.

She kept giving me shit. I sat on the edge of the pool with my feet in the water. “I’m not getting in with my shirt on,” I said. “That would look weird.”

“So, take it off,” she said, shrugging. “Everyone has seen you without your shirt.”

“Trust me, you don’t want me to take it off.”

“Why?”

I leaned down and lowered my voice. “Because not only did you turn into a lioness with talons, but you left behind some very dark marks on my chest.”

Her eyes widened. “Oh. Yeah. No. Leave the shirt on. I’ll shut up.”

“Thought so,” I said, laughing.

When it was time for dinner, we joined everyone in the lower restaurant after cleaning up and changing clothes. Everyone was dressed up and looked amazing. We dined on surf and turf cooked to perfection. The wine pairing was perfect. The night was going off just as I hoped.

“I’d like to invite everyone up to the ballroom for a special last night event,” the captain said.
