I got butterflies in my stomach as we climbed the stairs up to the ballroom. The place looked amazing. Black and silver balloons hung from the ceiling. There was silver confetti on the tables and champagne was immediately served.

“This is all very fancy,” Macy whispered close to my ear.

“That’s because it’s a very special occasion.”

“Our last night on the cruise?” she asked.

“That too.”

I took her hand and led her to the front of the room. She looked nervous. “What are you doing?” she hissed.

“Trust me,” I said and squeezed her hand. “Everyone, can I have your attention please?”

The chatter died down, and all eyes in the room turned toward us.

“I’m sure there are some rumors going around about myself and Macy,” I said. “I’d like to address those rumors. Let me start by confirming them. Macy and I go way back. We met eight years ago, and I declared my love for her back then. If any of you know Macy, you know she’s nothing if not practical. She shut me down, guys.”

There was some laughter around the room.

“That was the first time. When she came to work for me, neither of us had any idea it was happening. I saw her again, and I knew I was still crazy about her. It’s been a bumpy couple of weeks, but my feelings for her then were true and they have only grown stronger. I love this woman. I messed up the first time and didn’t convey my feelings properly to her. Tonight, I’m going to remedy that.”

I turned to her, not missing the red stain on her cheeks. I dropped to one knee in front of her. Gasps echoed around us. Macy’s eyes bulged as she stared down at me.

“Macy Stiles, I love you. I want to be with you for the rest of my life. You are the only woman I will ever love. I’m asking you in front of all our coworkers to be my wife. I don’t want there to be any confusion about who you are to me. I’m not hiding anything. Ever. I love you. Will you please marry me?”

She looked at me with tears in her eyes. “Yes.” She choked on the word. “Yes!”

I pulled the ring from my pocket. “Forgot this,” I said, laughing.

Everyone in our audience laughed as well. I slid the ring on her finger and got to my feet. She threw her arms around me and kissed me to the cheers and whistles from the others. I would tell her the history of the ring later. For now, I just wanted to celebrate the fact she said yes.

We turned to face the crowd of people. Most of the women were crying. Tissues were being handed out by the attentive ship crew.

“Everyone, thank you for being a part of our special moment,” I said. “You all know how much I appreciate every single one of you. I want you all to know nothing changes. Macy is a part of our team and a part of me.”

There was a round of applause. I pulled her into my arms again. “That one night in Vegas changed my life in the best way,” I said close to her ear.

“Mine too,” she replied. “Thank you for waiting for me.”
