“Definitely,” I said. “Remember the girl from Vegas?”

He groaned and shook his head. “How could I forget? You won’t let anyone forget.”

“Well, we hooked up last night,” I said.

He looked confused. “What? How? I thought you didn’t know who she was or where she was.”

“I didn’t, but she walked back into my life a few days ago. I wasn’t expecting it. She just showed up and applied for a job. Not just any job. She applied to be my assistant.”

“So, she’s known where you’ve been this whole time?”

I shook my head. “No. At least she says she didn’t. I’m not sure what to think.”

“But you ended up in bed with her?”

“Yes. And then I did what she did.”

“What does that mean?” he asked.

“We fucked. She got off and passed out. I left while she was sleeping.”

He was quiet for several seconds. “Way to be twelve,” he said.

“Hey, I was just giving her a taste of her own medicine,” I said, shrugging.

“You’re an idiot.”

“What?” I asked with confusion. “She fucked me over back then. Turnabout is fair play.”

“You have been pining for this woman since you left that place,” he said. “Why in the hell would you go fuck it up? You get the chance to build on the very nominal foundation you built in Vegas and you walked out? You ruined any chance you might have had to get with her. That was a dumb move.”

“It was revenge,” I argued. I had really thought I would have his support. He was the one person in the world I thought would be cool with what I did. I needed him to assuage the guilt I felt.

“I think you might have shot yourself in the foot with this,” he said. “You wanted revenge because you’re still smarting. You’re only smarting because you cared. After what you’ve done, you don’t stand a chance in hell of ever righting that wrong.”

“I have no intention of righting any wrong,” I said. “She is one of billions of ladies. I have no intention of seeing her again. I just wanted her to know she wasn’t the one that walked out on me. I walked out on her. I had to get her out of my system. Last night was nothing more than an exorcism. She’s out of my system for good. Now, I can actually move on. She can carry that feeling of being used.”

“You act like you didn’t enjoy yourself—both times,” he said, laughing. “Seriously, most men would be thrilled to have a woman only want a single night. You’re the one who wanted to run off and get married. I’m thinking she just wanted a fun night in Vegas.”

“Bullshit,” I snapped. “If that was true, she shouldn’t have let me believe she wanted more.”

“Okay, then it’s over,” he said. “Hallelujah! Let’s go out this weekend. If you are well and truly over her, it’s time to celebrate. You’ve been carrying that chick’s ghost for too damn long.”

I held up my glass. “Amen to that.”

In the back of my mind, I hoped like hell that was all true. I wanted to be over her. Ever since she walked out on me all those years ago, I had one goal in mind. I wanted to make her suffer as much as I did. I told myself that was all I needed to put the whole nightmare to bed.

If that was the case, why did it feel like there was still some unfinished business?

MACY

Ilay in bed a good long while, simply staring up at the ceiling.I should have known. That was all I could think. I should have known Jon was up to no good.

He was fucking with me. Last night had been all about getting me back for what I had done to him all those years ago. It was petty but I supposed that was what he wanted.

He wanted revenge.
