“Thank you, everyone, for taking the time out of your busy schedules to make the meeting,” I started. “This won’t take long. It’s nothing related to business. It’s about our next team-building event.”

Everyone relaxed a bit. Macy was standing near the back of the room. I liked that she was acting as my right hand versus a typical assistant.

“What’s it going to be?” someone asked.

“I’m glad you asked,” I said and clapped my hands together. “I hope you’re all feeling athletic. For those that aren’t up for too much action, you’ll be the strategists. This is the first annual Office Olympics.”

There was some laughter, cheering a few of the older folks who looked nervous.

“I’m going to need scorekeepers and refs,” I said. “I know not everyone is going to be able to participate in the actual events, but everyone will be involved.”

“Teams?”

“Yes, I’ve divided the teams as equally as I thought possible. We will be skipping work Friday and meeting at the beach.”

“What’s the prize?”

My people knew me very well. “A prize?” I teased. “Who said anything about a prize?”

I caught Macy watching me. She had no idea I was about to find a way to put us both back in Vegas together. One way or another, I was going to show her how we could have fun. I could be fun outside the bedroom.

“Come on,” Brian said. “You wouldn’t do this if you had nothing to offer.”

“The winning team will get a thousand dollars and an all-expenses-paid trip to Vegas for a stay at my penthouse there. Losing team, you won’t go home completely empty-handed. I’ll pony up a hundred bucks for everyone on the team that doesn’t win.”

I didn’t want anyone to feel like they were doing all this for nothing. If they were losers and truly won nothing for their efforts, I didn’t guess they would try nearly as hard if it looked like they were going to lose.

“What are the teams?” someone asked.

“I’ll have Macy post it by the end of the day,” I told them.

“Just Friday?” another asked.

“Yep, one day only. There will be water and field exercises. Your team will come up with the best strategy to win.”

We covered a few more details before everyone went back to their work with smiles on their faces. Macy hung back. “Is this normal?” she asked.

“Is what normal?”

“Olympics?” she questioned.

I grinned. “Generally, there is some form of competition. It’s all about keeping everyone happy to be here while building on our team dynamics.”

“A thousand bucks?” she asked.

“Yes. Too little?”

“Uh, no.” She snorted. “That’s more than enough. It’s very generous.”

“I like to keep my people happy,” I said, shrugging. “They built the company with me. We all deserve to share the wealth.”

“It’s nice,” she said.

“FYI, you and I will be on opposite teams,” I teased.

She smiled and started collecting the notepads. “Good.”

“Good?”
