“I got cocky,” he said. “The beam was slick as snot. I lost my balance and I couldn’t recover.”

“What hurt your ego more, the fall or the loss?”

He chuckled again. “They were both very painful.”

“My team is pretty stoked,” I said. “I honestly don’t think any of us thought we were going to pull it off. You guys looked like you had it in the bag.”

A man approached us.

“Hey, you made it,” Jon said.

“I did.” The man had a devastating smile. He had a Brad Pitt, Paul Walker look. I imagined it made plenty of women swoon. I found myself drawn to the darker look. He took my hand and kissed the back of it. “It’s very nice to meet you.”

Jon cleared his throat. “Dane, this is Macy.”

Dane looked at me like he knew me. A more natural, less contrived smile spread over his face as he slowly nodded. “I see. I get it now.”

“Excuse me?” I asked.

Dane looked at Jon. “I understand why you’re so hooked on this one.”

I tried not to smile. Jon looked like he was going to choke. “Stop,” he said in a low voice.

“She’s stunning,” Dane said and looked back at me. “Truly stunning.”

“Thank you,” I said, feeling a little awkward.

“Why don’t you go find yourself a drink?” Jon suggested.

“I think I’d like to stay right here,” Dane said. “I would love to know about the woman you just can’t seem to get over.”

“Go,” Jon ordered.

“It was nice to finally meet you,” Dane said. “I hope to talk with you again soon.”

He walked away, leaving Jon shaking his head. “I’m really going to have to talk with my family and friends about filters.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “I’m picking up on a theme.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be,” I said. “I’m curious, though.”

“About?”

“Not over me?” I teased.

He groaned again. “Need another drink?”

It was fun to tease him, but considering it was a work party, I didn’t want to make too big a deal about things. “I could use another drink,” I said. “Thank you.”

“Thank you for sparing me further humiliation today,” he said. “A man’s ego can only handle so much.”

“I’ll let you off the hook,” I said. “For now.”

He drifted away with me watching him glide through the crowd. He was beyond handsome. He just had an easy way about him that made me want to drag him into one of the many rooms in the giant house.

The words of his mom, and now his best friend, kept bouncing through my head. He wasn’t over me?
