"That makes me sound like not so much a nice guy. And technically, you’re the one who burned it down. "

"You're not a nice guy. But you're a kind and thoughtful guy."

She takes my arm and we walk towards the house, talking about how she hopes My-Linh and Damien will be home, since she would like to talk to them some more.

When a voice greets us out of the shadows, it startles us both.

"Kiara." Her brother.

"Nathan!" she yells in shock.

He walks into the light, and his face is gaunt, haggard. Dark circles round his eyes, his skin slack and green.

"It's time to come home, Kiara."

She shakes her head, and backs away, like she's expecting him to reach for her.

"Kiara. Enough. Let's go."

"What are you even doing here, Nathan?" she shouts, moving to hide behind me.

"I came to get you. We have to go home. We have to... we have to plan Dad's funeral. And the business and..."

"I can't. Nathan. I just can't. Just let me stay, please.”

"You don't have a choice, Kiara. This is what adults do, we do things we don't want to do."

"Nathan." I barely got his name out before he holds his hand up to my face.

"Don't. Just, don't. Kylian.” He tries to push me away, but I hold strong, covering her.

"How did you even know I was here, Nathan?"

He looks at me and then back at her. "Someone texted me."

"Kylian? Did you text him?" the betrayal in her voice is stark

"No, no I didn't. I left that up to you. It wasn't up to me to tell him where you were."

"Promise me!"

"I promise! I promise a hundred times!”

Behind us, Nathan snickers. "Do you really believe him when he makes you promises like that?"

Two thick lines dig themselves into her forehead. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, how well do you know him, that you'd believe a single thing he says to you?"

"I believe him because... I know him." She doesn’t sound as sure of herself as I’d hoped.

The laugh Nathan forces out, is hollow, empty, sarcastic. "Really? You've known him for three weeks and you think you're an expert on Kylian Baxter? So, tell me, do you know what his baby business project is?

"What is this about, Nathan?" I ask, foreboding starting to suffocate me.

"This is about showing my sister knew the truth about you. So, it doesn’t take her fifteen years to find out who you really are like it did me."

"Nathan, what are you saying?"
