A beautiful memory.

She chooses the seat across from me.

I lean back, hooking my hands behind my head as I stare up to the heavens. The sky is so clear tonight, the stars feeling like they're so close I can reach out and touch them. But there's something beautiful about them being just out of reach. Something to strive for.

I check my clock. 11:25 p.m.

"Kylian."

"Hmmm?"

"What are you doing here?"

"I’m just here to see you. And show you something."

"What?"

"Patience. You were always so impatient."

She exhales, and then asks the question I know has been on her mind. "Did you submit an offer to in for Watch?"

"No."

She exhales. "You need to get something now and send it to Nathan. It’s due in less than an hour."

I smile at her and then look back up at the sky. "Did you know on a clear day, you can see Mars from here?"

"Kylian! Have you gone mad?"

"No, Angel. Not ‘gone.’ I've always been mad. For you." I pat the seat next to me. "Come here."

"Kylian, no."

"You said you'd sit with me. So, sit with me."

The internal struggle plays out over her face but in the end, she comes over.

"Lean back,” I say. "See that there? That's the big dipper. Those seven stars there. Isn't it stunning? That in time and space, those giant balls of fire are nowhere near each other. But to us, they make this funny little shape in the sky."

"Kylian?"

"Shhh, I don't want to talk about work. Please. I just want to sit here with you, and watch light from over a hundred light years and trillions of trillions of miles away dance for us. Sometimes, you need to feel like a tiny part of the universe."

She finally gives in, and stares up, sighing after a while. "They're so pretty."

I look away from the sky, and over at her. "Yes, you are."

This time she doesn’t say anything, just points to the stars in the sky with her finger. Giving them a little wave, and hoping someone will see it trillions of miles away.

I close my eyes, so I can breathe her in. That scent I haven't properly smelled in weeks.

"You're going to lose out on Watch,” she says. “Nathan's not going to change him ind."

"I wouldn't expect him to. I'm not here about Nathan changing his mind about me. He's my best friend, he should know who I am. But he's choosing not to. I never did anything to him except love his sister. If he hates me, that’s his own shit showing through. But you, I hurt you. You're the one who needs to see I can change. And that every time I said to you that you are the most important thing in my life. I wasn’t lying. And if words won't show you. then maybe my actions will."

The galaxy twinkles above us, and we sit in total stillness and silence, even while the earth travels through the cosmos at over sixty thousand miles an hour.

At midnight, the clock on my phone rings. A tinkly little melody.
