She’s just standing outside her apartment.

“Kiara!”

She looks up to see me, and the look on her face freezes the blood in my veins.

twenty

Kiara

The door to my apartment is open.

The door to my apartment is only supposed to be open when I open it when I come home and when I leave.

There is absolutely no other time when it should be open.

My apartment is the only thing I accepted financial help with from my father when I moved back to Hong Kong, to have a place that was safe enough that I would not have to worry about this.

Again.

And now, the door of my apartment is open.

And I’m not the one who opened it.

"Kiara!"

I turn to the sound of the voice.

It's Kylian.

I'm glad to see him but I shouldn’t be. I should tell him to just go away, but I can't do this alone and I can't call the only two other people I trust in this moment.

"Kiara, what's wrong?" he asks as he runs up to me. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

I point at the door, still slightly ajar.

He frowns, not quite comprehending.

And then he does.

“When's the last time you were home?"

I shake my head. I don't know. Sometime before last night. And this morning. Everything's a blur.

“Did you come up here after I left you on the curb yesterday?”

“I don’t think so. No.”

“Okay, good. So, it was probably before that. And you definitely locked your door before you left?”

"I would never, ever, ever, not lock my door." Something you can just be absolutely sure of.

He nods, looking around, probably trying to see if there was any clue that could tell him what happened here. "Stand here and I'm going to go inside, okay?"

"No!" I grab his hand. "It's not safe."

"Kiara, whoever broke in, probably did it hours ago. Maybe even yesterday morning after I took you to the casino. I don't think they'd still be in there."

I look at him with what I imagine to be wild eyes, shaking my head.
