"Seriously though man, I can't even remember the last time you dated anyone."

Out of the corner of my eye, Kiara pretends she's not listening to every single word of the conversation. And I can only hope that she remembers everything I said to her this morning at her apartment.

Shit, was that really just this morning?

Time seems to have no concept to me since Tuesday, when I ran into Kiara at her dad's bar.

"Maybe you're just not looking closely enough,” I offer.

He turns to his sister who is making a big show of collecting up the food containers.

"Hey, Keeks, do you have any single friends you can introduce to this ugly ass here? She doesn't have to be pretty or rich or good looking or anything. Just breathing."

Kiara clears her throat and turns to look at her brother, clearly avoiding my eyes. "I don't know what his type is."

"I just told you. Breathing. But who am I kidding? You're more of a romance avoidant than him. Ever since..." his voice fades out and his mouth clamps shut.

"Hmmm?" I prompt, not able to help myself. If it has to do with Kiara, I want to know about it.

"Er, nothing, ever since she moved back to Hong Kong."

"I've been busy," she hisses through her teeth, trying to keep her voice light, but the balled-up fists by her side tell me otherwise.

"Whatever. I've got to go back to the office. Keeks, you want a ride?"

She shakes her head. "I drove here. And anyways, I haven't talked to Kylian about my contract yet."

"Okay, well, have the legal department look it over. Can't trust these Baxters." He grins at me and then turns back to his sister. "Can you come out here for a moment, I want to talk to you about something."

"Er, yeah, sure."

I wave them off as I sit back down on the couch, pulling my phone out of my pocket. "Take your time, Kiki. I haven't done today's Wordle yet."

"It's 'drink.' You’re welcome!" Nathan yells out as his sister pushes him out of my office.

"Asshole!!" I yell back.

"That's not five letters. Fuck, you're stupid!"

In the distance I can hear Kiara shush her brother and it makes me laugh.

And it takes everything in me not to move closer to the door to eavesdrop. But if I'm going to ask her to trust me, then I'm going to have to trust her right back.

Kiara

"What do you want?" I ask my brother, sounding more impatient that I'd meant to. The truth was I wasn't mad at him, I was just ready for the most anxiety-inducing lunch in my life to end.

"Hey," Nathan says, voice lowered, "I heard your car got stolen the other night."

"And where did you hear this from?"

"I have my sources."

"Spying on me again?"

"No. So, what happened?"

If I had an answer, I wouldn’t have driven here in Kylian’s Jag. "I honestly don't know. I had the car one moment and the next, I didn't"
