Chapter 32

Clarissa

It'sthrillingtoleavethe empty ballroom, still tasting Matthias's cum on my tongue and knowing he tastes it as well. I stand in the warm night air in front of the Plaza waiting for him to return with the car, my feet aching from the new shows. My mind wanders, thinking about all the ways he's going to fuck me in the dress, when someone grips my elbow.

"You look pretty. Wearing that dress for anyone in particular?" Gerry slithers into the space next to me.

The urge to be sick slams into me like a runaway truck. "Yes. Myself."

He snickers, his hand clammy, still grabbing my bare arm. "Always such a sassy little mouth. Even when you were in college, you would come to my house parading around in those little shorts. Were you hoping I'd fuck you?"

If I wasn't surrounded by people coming in and out of the hotel, I'd have kneed him in the groin and punched him in the face. "You're drunk. Get away from me."

An older couple I recognize from the gala gives me a friendly wave as they get in their waiting car. "Good night, Clarissa."

I wave back with a nod, not trusting myself to speak.

Next to me, Gerry snuffles like a pig digging for truffles. "Sweetheart, I think it's time I called in those favors, don't you think? Before things get a little too hot and heavy with my little nephew? Wouldn't you rather be seen on my arm, the actual CEO of Baxter Enterprises, rather than just some piddly little regional director?"

"He's ten times the man you are."

"But sweetheart, he'll never be yours. He's a fucking skirt chaser. Fucks anything that moves." My eyes close, trying not to listen to all the things I'd said to myself about Matthias. I don't even see when Gerry spins me around to face him. "Whereas I love you."

What the fuck? Just how drunk is he? "Let me go. He's going to be here soon."

"Good. He and I should talk. He might be promising you everything right now, but that's because you're all nice and shiny. I wonder how shiny he's going to think you are when I can tell him I was inside you before he ever was. What do you think he'll think about that?"

Dread mixes with abject regret, and I have to bite back a sob. "It was a mistake. You took advantage of me."

"Well, you would know all about that, wouldn't you? You did the same to Damien. We're cut from the same cloth, sweetheart. Come to me. I promise I'll treat you the way you need to be treated."

"We havenothing," I yell, unable to hold back. "You don't feel anything for me. And I certainly feel nothing for you."

I snatch my hand out of his grip and step away, trying not to make a scene.

His hand grabs my neck and he pulls me against him, snarling against my face, uncaring about all the people around us. "You little bitch. I'm going to make you mine anyway I can. Not that sniveling Patrick, not Matthias. And if I don't, I'm taking you all down with me. Check your phone next week. I'm going to tell you what I need from you to take Matthias down. You better decide right now whether you're with me or not."

I push him away, feeling my dress rip down the side.

I'm about to run when I see Matthias standing there.

"I suggest you step away from my fiancée, Gerald."

Gerry snaps around to see his nephew standing there, his car parked at the curb.

His eyes dark and dangerous.

I can't imagine what it must look like to Matthias, Gerry grabbing my arm, his face all but buried in my neck. Fear lodges in every pore, but I refuse to let Gerry see.

"Hello there, Matthias, where have you been all night? So much for representing our company at the gala. It's a good thing I'm here."

Matthias ignores his uncle and just repeats, "I said, step away from her. And take your grubby hands off her as well. I'm not going to ask you again."

Gerry sneers and then drops my hand and holds his up in surrender. "What's the big deal, nephew? I'm just saying hello to my former-now-current again niece-in-law. She looked a little lonely standing here, while you were off doing fuck knows what, fuck knowswho." He wiggles his eyebrows at me.

Matthias storms over and wedges his body between us. "We're in public, so I'm not going to do what I want to, or say what I want to, because I, unlike you, put my company above all else."

Gerry doesn't move, staring Matthias down. "Your reputation says otherwise. "
