He took a step closer and towered over me. “What’s wrong?”

“They’ve noticed I don’t wear a ring. You wear a ring but I don’t.” Letting my gaze drop from him to the floor, I felt foolish. Foolish for letting it get to me and foolish for forgetting to put it on before I left the house.

“A ring? You’re looking like the world was falling apart over a ring?” The crease between his brows deepened, and I felt like I was two feet tall under that stare. “Let me handle it.” He leaned down and kissed my lips, softly, passionately, and if he asked me to marry him all over again, I would say yes in an instant. “I have to go,” He whispered and walked out of the room. Leaning up against the wall, I wondered who this man was.

He looked like the boy I married, but he’d matured more than I was ready for.

CHAPTER27

GINNY

Round one ofthe playoffs was going too easy. The Rangers were up three games against New York. One more win and this round was over, and the team was hoping to clinch this round early. It had been a physical series, and the team was beaten up.

Everyone in the family box was anxious, not for the win, but to see how this game played out. It felt ominous that someone was going to get hurt, and we were all hoping it wasn’t our man.

The whistle blowing rang in my ears. It felt like time stopped and all the air was let out of the building when I saw that one of our players was down on the ice and not getting up. The number on his back made my blood run cold. Number seven, and above that, the letters spelled out Boone. Closing my eyes, I waited for clapping, signalling he was up, but none came. Silence filled the large arena and my heart plummeted to my feet.

“He’s up.” Sarah whispered as she placed her hand on my shoulder. I opened my eyes and saw the trainers helping him off the ice. His left skate, not touching the surface. His left leg was injured. This wasn’t good.

The rest of the game was a blur. Boone missed a few shifts but came back on the ice. He wasn’t skating well, but he scored a goal and the crowd went wild, but when the game was over, the win felt like a loss. I needed to see him. I needed to know what had happened. If I needed to get him in for scans tonight, I would open the clinic and get his treatment started right away. He was the last one out of the locker room and normally it didn’t matter, but I was about to go marching in to find out what the hell was going on.

“Gin, I’m fine.” He said as soon as he saw me standing in the hall.

“You don’t look fine.” I said I knew I was being short with him, but I didn’t care. “You’re on crutches again. Can you put weight on your leg?” I crossed my arms and stood in front of him, refusing to move to let him go by.

“Virginia, you’re here.” One of the team doctors walked out of the trainer’s room. “Would you be able to get him in tomorrow morning? See what we’re dealing with.”

“I could do it tonight, if you want,” I said and Boone shook his head no.

“Gin, I’m going home. This can wait until the morning.” He moved past me and I looked at the doctor.

“It’s fine. We can wait until morning. Thanks Virginia.” He walked the opposite way down the hall and I turned to chase Boone down.

Our drive home was silent. I wished I knew what to say.

“That was a dirty hit. Out of nowhere, Richards came flying at you, stuck his knee out and, well, now you’re going to my office. A guy doesn’t get ejected from a game by accident. It was on purpose. What’s your beef with him?” I asked when we got home.

“I don’t have a beef with Richardson. Well, maybe I do now, but I didn’t until tonight. Frustrations were high. They were projected to win everything this year, so to get swept out of round one is a little hard to swallow.” His voice trailed off, and it made me more anxious. “Am I done Gin?”

“I don’t know. We could go to the clinic tonight and I could get things rolling.” He nodded, and we walked back out to the car and drove to the facility.

My eyes were tired, and I was unsure of what I was looking at. “I don’t know. From the scans, it’s bad but I don’t think it’s a full tear but I will send it now and it will be read first thing in the morning and we will know more early. He’s a top orthopaedic doctor. That’s why he’s looking after you.” I reached over and put my hand on his good leg. “The one thing I will swear to you, Boone, is I won’t sugarcoat things. I will be honest with you so you can make decisions for your career and future with all the knowledge I can provide.” He nodded and got up from the chair.

“Let’s go back home. There’s nothing else we can do here.” He smiled his stressed crooked smile, and I turned lights off as we walked to the front door. Something caught my eyes from the corner of the parking lot. It was a flash, or something, but I was about to fall asleep, so I was probably seeing things.

As I walked in the door, my phone rang. Boone waved as he hobbled up the stairs. “Hello?” It was late, and I didn’t recognize the number.

“Hey Ginny, it’s Mark. I saw your email about Boone’s scans. I was watching the game, and I was waiting for them to come in.” Mark was one of the best friends I had in medical school. He and his wife welcomed me into their circle with open arms and while Boone was away and after we spilt I appreciated their friendship.

“What’s your diagnosis?” I asked hesitantly.

“Mild sprain. What you were seeing is the healed tear. Non weight bearing for a day or two and he can get back on it.” Mark’s voice was light, and it made me feel so much better about everything.

“Thanks Mark, I appreciate it.” I hung up the phone and went to find Boone.

He was already in bed, watching television. Not just a random show, the sports channel and the replays of the game he had just finished playing. “So that was Mark.” I sat on my side of the bed.

“Are you going to make me wait to torture me, or are you just trying to find the words to tell me my career is over?” He didn’t look away from the show, so I grabbed the remote and clicked it off.
