“Well, things aren’t what they seem to be at the Badelton Sports Medicine and Rehab facility. Over the coming weeks, we will look into this story more deeply. Thank you, doctor for sharing your experience. I trust you are working somewhere else now?” The announcer tapped her papers on the desk, waiting for him to talk so she could end her segment.

“Yes, I am. I don’t feel comfortable saying where for fear of backlash from my former employer and her husband, but I am at a wonderful new job.” He smiled and stared a the camera lens.

“Well, we are glad to hear that. Jim, back to you at the news desk,” Jillian said, and the screen changed from weasel's head to an older anchor, who was shaking his head.

“You never know what’s happening these days. Thank you, Jillian, for your reporting. Now let’s throw it over to sports.” I clicked the television off and turned around to see Boone walk back into the kitchen.

“I have Sam on it. He will figure out what’s going on and then we will draft a joint statement.” He leaned against the counter and I looked at him. He looked like he’d aged twenty years in the last five minutes. I walked to him and he wrapped me in his arms.

“I should have fired him a long time ago. He wasn’t even that good.” I wanted to crawl into a hole and never come out.

“In a few minutes we are likely going to get non-stop calls from reporters, family, friends, hell I don’t know, maybe even enemies.” He held me tighter.

He wasn’t wrong. Moments later, both our phones rang, and we were handeling calls, emails, and texts for the rest of the day. We were in the same room most of the day, but I felt like I hadn’t seen him at all. When his phone rang about ten at night. “Hello?” He answered, exhaustion filled his greeting. “Hang on, Sam. I want Ginny to hear this. I’m going to put you on speaker. Okay, we’re both here.”

“He hacked your cloud, Ginny. That’s how he found the video. The trial is there showing you deleted it, but your autosave to the cloud is on.” I looked up at Boone. This was unbelievable.

Shaking my head, I had hoped it would sort my thoughts out, but it didn’t help at all. “So now what, Sam?”

“Well, if I have your go-ahead, I will call Garrison’s lawyers now and have them press charges on your behalf. We can get him for the hacking, and slander. He made crucial mistakes in that interview because never once did he say allegedly. We might be able to go after the station to because if they had done their own research, they would have realized this held no weight.” Sam went silent and I guess it was my turn to talk.

“I want him taken down. Press whatever charges you think that will stick. Nobody does this to us and gets away with it.” I walked away from the phone and I could hear Boone still talking to his agent.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” Boone asked when he came out onto the porch and sat beside me on the swing.

“Boone, if I don’t do this, what happens to the clinic? To the kids that rely on the money I make there to skate and play hockey? Everything I worked for all these years.” I let my voice trail off. “I gave up on us to make this dream happen. I won’t let that be taken down by someone who needed a reality check who is sad I didn’t want to fuck him.” My words were harsh, but right now I couldn’t pretend things were okay. They were so far from okay.

“All right, I have your back.”

CHAPTER30

GINNY

My face wason the front of every rag magazine overnight. Boone was a star, and I was now the doctor who nursed him back to health and back into my heart. Which wasn’t exactly untrue, but I did resent most of the titles of the articles. Dr. Love, Dr. Feel Good. They reduced what I did; they belittled what the centre did. What was worse, they managed to track down Garth, who had been more than happy to sing like a canary. This is what he wanted, fame, no matter how he got it. Thankfully, many of the articles made him seem like a snivelling baby.

Stepping out of our house, I was swarmed with reporters asking questions and taking pictures. They all yelled questions as I got into my car. This had to die down, right? I asked myself. The nice thing about being with Boone the last time, is nobody really knew who he was. Oh, sure, he went high in the first round of the draft, but we had been able to live quietly. But now his career was skyrocketing. He was a franchise player and my life was no longer quiet.

My phone rang, and I hit the button on the steering wheel. “Hello?” I was short and I should have looked at who it was because the voice that answered back made me even more stressed.

“Good morning dear.” Her musical voice was just as grating over the phone as it was in person. “How have you been?”

“I’m doing fine, mom. To what do I owe this phone call?” I stepped on the brake and pulled to a stop, waiting for the light to change.

She clicked her tongue, and I knew she was about to get into a discussion. “Darling, you and Boone, since when are you back together?”

“After the charity auction for the skating school.” I didn’t want to give too much information. She wasn’t ever happy that Boone and I had gotten married. Or maybe it was more like she wasn’t happy that I ran off to get married in the middle of the night. Her only daughter eloped and refused to have a big to do after. It was her greatest disappointment as a southern mother. If I heard that once, I heard it a thousand times.

“So since before I talk to you at Christmas. I guess I don’t count on the list of people to tell.” She was pouting. We hadn’t ever been close, and I rarely told her anything, so this really should have surprised her. “I bet Garrison’s family knew all about it, right?”

There it was, the possibility of someone knowing something before her. She didn’t have bragging rights. “Well yes mom, I spent Christmas with them, since you can’t leave Ian.”

“Dear, he has children and they need to be at home over the holidays. Do you think we should drop everything here and come to you? You’re single, or I thought you were, so there was nothing stopping you from coming to see us.” This wasn’t worth the argument or the headache that was guaranteed to happen. “Are you going to renew your vows in secret also?” She quipped.

“Mother, I have no idea where this is going. I am definatly not thinking about a vow renewal.” My tone was short, and I wanted to get off the phone before I said something I would regret.

“Just think long and hard about this before you jump in with both feet. You were miserable last time and Boone really didn’t care about your feelings. I just don’t want to see you hurt again. Have your fun, scratch the itch you apparently have, and move on.” Her voice got quiet and sad.

I was supposed to be driving to the store, and I needed to stop talking to her. “Mom, I need to go. I can’t drive and talk to you at the same time.”
