Turning to the kids, the hockey players were almost vibrating as they were standing there waiting. “All right everyone, warm up. Do your laps while I organize with Coach Boone.” They all took off to get their warmups done. I left him and went to focus on the kids who wanted to figure skate. This would be a benefit to them also, as they would now have my undivided attention. Maybe having him back would be a good thing.

The time with the kids always flew by and I felt like I gave these skaters everything in me today. I tried not to pay attention to what Boone was doing at the hockey end, but I couldn’t help myself. He was calling instructions, and the kids were listening intently. It made me wonder what we could have accomplished by now if I hadn’t walked away. “All right everyone, I think your parents are ready to get you home. Let’s wrap up and head out.” All Boone’s players fist bumped him as they skated off the ice. Somehow, they look more like a team than they ever had before.

A smile shone on Boone’s face and when he turned, our eyes welded on one another. “I haven’t had this much fun in ages, and I couldn’t even be on the ice.” Boone grabbed water, and I skated to the door and stepped onto the rubber flooring. “You are amazing with the figure skaters. Do you make the hockey players skate with the other group?” He sat down and waited while I put my skate guards on.

“I do. I think it makes them better skaters. They learn to use their edges and maybe they get a little more polishing. It worked for you, didn’t it?” Looking at him, the smile faded, and he nodded.

“What’s wrong?” I asked as we picked up the last of the equipment we both used.

“Nothing, I was just thinking back to you and I. I watched you with those kids and you were so patient and kind to them. I wished you had that kind of grace from your coaches.” He put his arm around my shoulder and, out of habit, I let mine fall around his waist, as we skated a few laps around the ice like we used to.

“No matter what those kids do, they will never know the terror I met with every time I stepped on this ice. It was my mission when I set this up. The dynamic has to change. It’s not good for anyone involved, much less impressionable young kids who are trying their best.” Boone stopped and pulled me back to him.

“That’s why you’re the best.” He lowered his head and pressed his lips to mine, pulling me closer. Making out at the rink was nothing new for us, but after eight years, it felt new, and maybe a little too public. A door slammed shut, and I pulled away from Boone.

“All the kids should have been long gone. I wonder who is here. We’re going to have to check the facility before we go home. I don’t want anyone in here all night, taking whatever they want. I don’t think we could recover from that.” My heart raced, and I felt like whoever was here wasn’t here for a good reason.

CHAPTER10

BOONE

Ginny movedaround the house quietly, barely even acknowledging I was present. “What’s wrong?” I asked as I walked up behind her, wrapping her up in my arms. This might be a see what happens few months, but I was determined to make her remember the chemistry between us.

“Nothing’s wrong Boone, it’s game day. I’m trying to give you your space.” There it was. She was thinking back to the man I had been too early in our marriage. I avoided anyone on game days and that included her. I had even started sleeping in a different room on those nights just so I wouldn’t be thrown off my focus.

“Ginny, I’m not him anymore. I was selfish and I know that was part of what lead you to leave. It wasn’t fair of me and I’m sorry.” She relaxed back into me and I felt all the tension leave her body. I didn’t want to hope that this was an enormous change, but it was a change none the less. “What time will you be home today?”

She glanced at her watch and threw something in her lunch bag. “I will be home by three-thirty so I can leave by four. That will get me into Hapsburg before the traffic gets bad to the rink. I’m assuming there’s a place to eat there?” Ginny zipped up the bag and grabbed it as she lifted my arm and snuck out between me and the counter.

“There’s a team restaurant in the basement. Security has all your information. Your lanyard will get you anywhere you’re allowed to go, so make sure you don’t forget it.” She nodded.

“All right, I will see you after the game. I guess you’ll be gone before I get home. Good luck tonight.” She smiled warmly, grabbed her coat, and ran out the door. It was the end of November and didn’t even put a jacket on. My mind raced, wondering if she was that happy to get away from me.

The house was too quiet as the morning wore on. I tried to listen to podcasts, music that would get me ready for the game, but nothing was working. I was too nervous. It had been a long time since I felt like this, but the first game with a new team psyched a lot of players out. There was one thing that always helped. Taking the stairs two at a time, I grabbed my phone and laid on the bed.

A loud crashing ruined the mood I had just gotten into. “Where is she?” Ginny yelled as she stalked around the room before yanking open her closet door.

“Who?” I yelled, covering myself up.

“The fucking girl you have in my bedroom. I heard the moaning and calling your name.” I watched her face change as she realized the moaning was still happening and it was coming from my phone. “You’re watching porn?”

“No, not exactly,” I said, putting my hands behind my head and relaxing back into the pillow.

“Then what exactly is it?” She spat, waving my phone at me.

Propping myself up on my elbows, I looked at her. “Maybe you should take a long, hard look at the video.” I couldn’t help but grin as her mind registered what she was watching.

“Garrison Paul Boone, you were supposed to delete that.” Her voice was full of panic and her cheeks had turned a beautiful blush shade of pink and I couldn’t stop the grin that spread across my face. She looked back down at the phone and squinted at the picture. “This is, oh no Boone. I thought this was gone.” Her eyes were wide as she looked back up at me. “Why do you still have it? Why are you watching it?” She tossed my phone back to me as if it was something burning her hands.

“It’s what got me though eight years without you Gin.” I wasn’t lying, when I needed to see her it was one thing I referenced the most, along with our one wedding picture, and the one someone snapped her kissing me after my triple A team won the Citation Cup. She had looked back at the phone again. She hadn’t turned down the volume, and the video was still playing and I could hear the sounds she was making as I plunged deep into the abyss that only I had known. “Those were good nights, Ginny.” I said, my voice thick and filled with lustful need.

“Not just nights, though, Boone. It was anytime, anywhere with you.” She looked up at me and I could see her eyes were filled with longing. “How often do you watch this?” She asked in a whisper.

“I listen to it more than I watch. Because then I can close my eyes and imagine I’m buried deep in you again.” I reached for my phone and stopped the clip before her phone buzzed in her pocket.

She unlocked her phone and frowned as she opened the text I sent her. Quickly pressing the phone to her chest, she looked back at me. “Boone, you have to get rid of this,” she whispered, as if someone could hear our conversation. “Wait, were you? Did I just walk in on you? Boone, I’m so sorry, I will go.” Flustered and flapping her arms as if she was going to take off, she made a few circles before remembering where the door was.

Just as she reached the door, I shifted. “Ginny, stop.” As if floating through the air, she turned and walked back to the bed. Leaning down, she brushed her lips over mine. I felt like I was frozen. Finally, I managed to make my arms work, and I pulled her down to me. I wanted to devour her, kiss every part of her, and then start over again. Ginny’s kisses set something ablaze in me that had been quenched for too long. My love for her never stopped, but now I needed her.
