“I’ve had some news.”

“What is it?” He picks me up and carries me over to the large window seat in the room and I rest my head on his broad chest, feeling his big heart thump under my ear.

I rest my fingers on it and smile. “I’m pregnant.”

He stills and it’s like he’s holding his breath, thinking that he heard me wrong. The doctor said it shouldn’t be a problem for me to get pregnant again but both of us had our doubts and fears.

“Say that again,” he gulps, his blue gaze sparkling with tears that make my own throat choke up.

“I’m pregnant.” I pull his hand down to touch my belly and the sheer, overwhelming joy in his eyes is almost too much to bear. His big, rough hand cups my slightly-rounded belly that doesn’t even have a baby bump yet.

“We’re having a baby,” he whispers roughly and a few tears trickle down his lean, dark cheeks, mixing with the little bit of dark scruff that’s always there anymore. He works too hard.

“We are having a baby,” I say, my own voice a little choked up.

He rests his forehead against mine and then touches my lips gently with his soft lips and more tears trickle down both our cheeks. “Damn, I love you, dove. So damn much. You’ve made me the happiest I’ve ever been and you just keep adding more and more to that happiness. It’s a miracle that I found you at Club Curve and I will thank the good lord every damn day I take a breath for finding you.”

He draws in a shuddering breath and stands up, carrying me out of the room. “We will finish that whole room as soon as we can. I want to make sure that we’re ready for our little one.”

“Maybe we should wait.” My voice trembles when I answer him softly. “You never know. What if…”

He stops as he carries me into our room and settles me gently on the bed. “You have to think positive thoughts, dove. If the good lord wills it, we will have our family in nine months or so. If he doesn’t…well, there’s always adoption.”

“Probably not fostering. They tend to frown at mobsters being foster parents.”

He chuckles. “ I would burn down this world for you. So if you wanted to foster babies, you would be fostering. I’d just have to find a way. But I have a good feeling. We will be welcoming our own little one soon.”

I yawn and cuddle into his side when he lies down next to me and rests my head on his chest.

“I can’t believe how tired I am.”

“Then rest. And know that I will take care of everything. I am your rock and shelter. I’ll be here when you wake.”

He kisses my cheek lightly and I turn my face into his chest, breathing that uniquely masculine scent that is all him. “Thank you.”

“For what?” He asks me, his fingers gently caressing my cheek and throat.

“For loving me.”

“I couldn’t do anything else. As soon as I saw you, I knew you were the one.”

I close my eyes and drift off, knowing that no matter what shakes our foundation, we’ll always be together. If he’s my rock and my shelter, I’m the soft place for him to land.
