I was in love with her, just like I knew Luca was. But I knew she didn’t see me in that way. I was just a bodyguard to her and there was no way she would look at me and find me attractive. Sure, my face was okay but my weight… ever since I left the army, I had never been able to stay in shape.

I was discharged early at the age of thirty after having multiple surgeries on my knee, but my heart had never been in that career. My discharge was followed by my divorce shortly after, the woman who had been with me since we were teenagers said I couldn’t give her what she wanted more than anything, a family.

That was seven years ago. I was a thirty-seven-year-old man who found solace in a security firm, being a hired gun for the mafia wasn’t exactly on my plans but it was better than nothing and when I met Aurora two years ago, I knew I wouldn’t leave her side.

“Come on. We have to get there by nine and then you have the meeting with that lawyer Alejandro recommended, right?” Luca said as he stood.

“We can take my truck.” I said as he nodded and ruffled Fabian’s hair.

“Go get your shoes, kid and clean your face. You want to make a good impression.” Fabian sighed dramatically before he trudged off to his room.

“I hope he goes okay. Am I doing the right thing?” Aurora asked and my heart ached for her. She was a good mom. She may have had him when she was twenty and still barely a kid herself, but she was a fierce mother bear, especially after everything they had been through.

The mafia world was brutal, and Alonso was the worst of them all. I had seen some of the interactions with the Maddens who were technically the head of all the families and the Mendez family had been instrumental in helping us find Fabian. They all seemed to be good men beneath the image and the women in their lives had changed them for the better.

“Ror. You are doing the right thing. He needs to get back into a normal life. If we need to pull him out, we will. Don’t worry so much, gorgeous. We have your back.” He glanced at me as I tugged her to me for a hug.

It was innocent enough, but I was doing it for my own selfish means. I wanted to touch her, smell her and feel her body against mine.

“Hey, mama bear. You are doing the right thing. You always amaze me with how strong you are. Don’t falter now.” I whispered as she relaxed into me.

I was so much taller than her and I had to bend my 6ft 2 frame to hug her properly, trying to ignore the fact that I had so much padding around my stomach that it bulged more as I leant over.

“Thank you. I needed that.” She said as Luca winked.

“So. We hear your night was over and done with quickly.” It sounded like a joke, but I caught the underlying question in his voice.

“Mmm. It wasn’t what I expected.” Luca grinned.

“I believe the term two pump chump was used.” She stared at him with horror.

“Oh my god. Fabian heard? And that little devil. It wasn’t that bad.” She rolled her eyes as I tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

“Fabian said he did what he did because the man called you a whore.” I hadn’t meant to say it but the idea of someone calling her anything like that made me want to bury the man alive.

Her cheeks turned a delicate shade of pink.

“Umm. Yeah, but it wasn’t done in a mean way. It was in the heat of the moment, and I don’t mind it if it is with the right person.” So, she also enjoyed degradation. I couldn’t bring myself to say things like that to her, she deserved nothing but praise.

“Was he the right person?” I asked, leaning down to cup her chin. Her breath was warm against me, and she licked her lips.

“No.” She whispered before Fabian came trudging back into the room with a dramatic sigh. I let her go, meeting Lucas’ eyes as she turned to finish her coffee.

I saw the same hunger and desperation in his eyes that I am sure he saw in mine, though for him it must be worse. He had known her most of her life.

“Come on. Let’s go before we are late.” He said, the unspoken desire we all had left hanging in the air around the woman who seemed to never notice we wanted more.

Chapter four

Aurora

Everlysatacrossfromus with a polite smile. We had decided to meet at a café to keep our profiles low as she was in the process of shifting to another new office to work with Chris Whitlock.

“I don’t know how much you were told, but there are some things you need to know about us before we start, things that could tarnish your view of who I am.” I said as Luca made room on the table for our coffees.

Kingston sat on my other side, his body close to mine and giving off a steady warmth that calmed my nerves. The man was like a giant teddy bear, always there to give some kind of support and comfort. I know he struggled with how people saw him, and his self-esteem had taken a big hit at some point in his life, but I found him attractive.

Not that I would tell him that and make him feel uncomfortable.
