“She’s my wife, of course.”

“No. That’s not what I meant. You’d rather die than hurt that woman. She’s lucky, and I’m sorry for this.” She straightened and turned away from me.

“I’m sorry. You are a beautiful woman, Sash. And you deserve a kind, loving man. Not me.”

“It’s fine, Doc. It’s another reason why I respect you.”

That was it—all the push I needed. I think a part of me had always known since the second time I set eyes on her. I was falling hopelessly in love with Zoey Carter, and I had to find her before I lost my sanity. When the elevator door dinged open on my floor, I went into my office, grabbed my phone, and called a man whose services I never thought I would need again. “Please find me a Miss Olivia. I’ll send you her picture. She was at my wedding, and I need to find her desperately.”

I paced the length of the office as I awaited his response.

Ding!

‘You have received a new email.’

I raced to the elevator and then out of the hospital. I pulled out of the parking lot after I had typed the address into the car GPS. It was only five minutes from the hospital, and it was quite easy to find. The building was old and painted a dull brown. Most of the paint had chipped away, and the door gave a loud creak when I pushed it open, attracting a few glances my way.

I found her easily as she was seated behind the huge front desk.

“Why are you here?” she seethed.

“I need to see her, Olivia.”

She left her place behind the desk after mumbling something to the woman who was behind her. She pulled me by hand out of the library to the busy sidewalk out front.

“You have some nerve showing up here, Mr. Black. And if you think for one split second that I will help you, then—”

“I love her. I don’t know when or how it started, but I need to let her know, even if it means letting her go. But I truly love her, and I need your help. Please. I know I’ve been a jerk, but I’m here now, and I want to make it right. Please help me to make it right.”

She was staring at me intently, studying me.

“My shift ends in thirty minutes. Grab a book and wait,” she finally said.

“Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me just yet. Let’s just hope she doesn’t kill you and me.”

- HOME BOUND

ZOEY CARTER

“Hey, buddy.”

I jolted awake at the sound of the voice. I imagined I missed the annoying jerk so much that I’d started hearing things. I missed the girls, and it’s taken every ounce of strength in me not to sneak over and spend time with them. I’d been so infuriated that I didn’t even take time to think my decision over, and honestly, he deserved everything I said to him and more. Olivia had been kind enough to let Jason and I crash at her place until I could figure everything out.

“Hey, Daddy.”

Okay, definitely not hearing things.

“I missed you, bud. I am so sorry for yelling at you, son. How are you? You’ve grown bigger.”

I heard chuckling. “It’s only been three days, Dad.”

“Has it? Felt like months to me. Where’s your mom?”

I heard the sound of approaching footsteps and tried to calm my racing heart. The door opened to reveal a guilty-looking Olivia. “I’m sorry, babe. He came to my work, and I think you should hear him out.”
