This time when he came at me, I was ready. His whole body hit mine and I grabbed him and spun him, pinning him against the wall so he couldn’t get another sucker punch in at me.

I knew he was hurting, and I didn’t want to make it worse. But I wasn’t about to be his punching bag while he figured out his fucking feelings.

“What the fuck is going on out here!” Zane roared as everyone rushed into the outer room. “Knock it off!”

Merlin pushed Scout and I apart and I stumbled backward into Cookie, my chest heaving and my hands shaking as adrenaline rushed through me.

“What the hell has gotten into you two?” Zane asked. “We’re in the God damned White House and you’re brawling like kids on a playground?”

I desperately wanted to tell my commanding officer that Scout had started it, but we were already being accused of acting like children, I didn’t need to add to that sentiment.

“Sorry, boss.” I realized I was still leaning against Cookie and took a step away. “Won’t happen again.”

“Sorry,” Scout said, not sounding the least bit remorseful for what had just happened.

“Let’s go upstairs and talk,” Raptor insisted, his arm sliding around Scout’s shoulders.

“Don’t touch me!” Scout yelled, shoving Raptor away from himself. “You have no right! I’m not a fucking toy you can just decide you want to pay attention to because someone else decided to it pick up.”

“Who the fuck do you think you’re talking to?” Raptor shouted.

I slunk toward the open door, pulling Cookie with me. Cookie reached out and snagged Merlin’s arm and we all walked into the Situation Room, followed by Zane who closed the door behind us to give Everest and Brian some privacy.

“What the fuck was that?” Cookie hissed. “What did you say to Scout?”

“Nothing!” I insisted. “We were just talking, and he went ballistic.”

I reached up to touch my eye and hissed in pain. My whole socket felt hot and judging from the tenderness around it, I was going to end up with one hell of a shiner.

“Look, I’m not just taking Scout’s side,” Zane said, crossing his arms as he glared at me. “But I’ve never seen that kid hit anyone before. What did you say to him?”

“I asked him if he found anything at BIH. Then he kind of caught me off guard when he told me he thinks thatRickyis innocent and that I’m worthless on the squad. So yeah, we had some words, but nothing that was worth getting physical over.”

“Ricky?” Merlin and Cookie said in unison, turning to look at each other with twin expressions of surprise.

“Yeah, I was a little concerned, too.” I said, shrugging.

There was a soft knock on the door and Zane went to answer it while Cookie tipped my head back and inspected my eye.

“That’s going to look disgusting,” he warned me.

“Yeah,” Merlin agreed. “You two are probably going to be doing it with the lights off for a while.”

I felt my eyes widen as I stared at Cookie, the motion causing pain to blossom once more across my cheekbone, but he just shrugged and gave me a small smile.

Great. So he’d told Merlin. Fantastic. Like the day hadn’t started off shitty enough. Now I was going to get teased by the magic man. Just what I was hoping would happen.

Zane walked back over to us and turned a hard, vicious glare at Cookie.

“I’ve got an FBI agent out in the hall looking for the red headed guy who asked her to run some data on BIH and the Pentagon breaches. Shall I invite her in, or do you want to keep doing this shit behind my back?”

Silence fell like a brick. It felt as if every one of us stopped breathing, it was so quiet. But as usual, Merlin broke the tension.

“Oooh, busted.”
