“Well, fuck!” I felt everyone turn to look at me before I realized I’d said that out loud. “I mean…”

“Oh to hell with it,” Zane snapped, opening the door again and ushering the woman inside. “What did you find out?”

“Well,” the woman said, her gaze dropping to the floor as she spoke.

“We don’t have classified information on the screens,” Zane said, his tone thick with humor. “You can look around, it’s okay.”

“Right,” she said, shaking her head as she looked back up at him. “I compared the dates of the breaches with the visitor log at the Pentagon. And there was overlap with one BIH employee.”

“Who?” I asked, my heart hammering in my chest.

“Richard Blake,” she admitted. “But, he’s there all the time. Like…all the time. Sometimes multiple times a day. And there weren’t breaches every time he swiped in. So it could just be—”

“A coincidence?” Max guessed. “Yeah. That’s happening a lot lately.”

“Were you able to place him at any of the terminals when the breaches occurred?” I asked, praying for some kind of break here.

“Well, yes, sort of.” She rolled her lower lip between her teeth then sighed. “Look, he was near them, yes. But he never once touched the computers. None of them. He was standing close to the terminals when the breaches occurred, but we watched every single one and he never actually accessed the hardware.”

“Who did?” Merlin asked.

“No one,” she admitted. “There wasn’t anyone logged in, or even touching those terminals during the actual breaches.”

“Well, how the fuck is that possible?” Zane yelled. He let out a slow breath and gave the woman a small smile. “Sorry. I’m a little frustrated at the moment and I don’t mean to take it out on you.”

“We’re all frustrated, sir,” she assured him. “Director Sharpe is about to lose his shi…um, mind.”

“Yeah, I can imagine Miles isn’t very happy,” Zane said. “Listen, thank you for coming by with the information. Keep up the good work.”

“Yes, sir,” she said. She nodded to each of us before leaving, closing the door behind herself.

“Well, now what?” Max asked.

“I need to find out if Richard Blake could have remotely accessed those computers just by being close to them,” Zane admitted. “And I think I need Scout for that.”

“I wouldn’t recommend asking him that without a helmet and maybe some pads,” Max suggested.

“Merlin, you should ask Dane if the boss can borrow his equipment,” I said, turning to Michael with a grin.

“Oh come on,” Zane said, looking from me to Merlin. “You really did fuck Dane Acker?”

“A gentleman doesn’t kiss and tell,” Merlin insisted. “And you’re one to talk.” He turned to glare at me. “What room did you slink out of at three o’clock this morning?”

“Okay, that’s enough,” I said. “What the fuck are we going to do about this?” I turned back to Zane. “We still have no fucking proof.”

“No, we don’t,” Zane agreed. “In fact, everything we do have appears to clear Richard Blake, not condemn him.” He shook his head. “I need to talk to Spencer. You guys…I don’t even fucking know what I need you to do right now. God, this is a fucking nightmare.”

“Like it wasn’t before,” I said.

“Yeah,” Zane said. “Alright. Just…get the fuck out of here. Clear your heads. Pony, get something on that eye, it looks awful.”

“Who knew Scout had such a right hook?” Pony said, gingerly touching his face.

“I’ll text you when I need you,” Zane said. “And for now just…give Raptor and Scout some space, okay?”

“Yes, sir,” I said as Merlin and Pony agreed as well.

Zane stormed out and when he was gone, I turned to look at the other two men.
