“Seriously,” I said. “What the fuck do we do now?”

Neither of them answered me, and I hadn’t really expected them to. We all knew now that Richard Blake was guilty as hell, but somehow our proof made him look more innocent than ever. And if he had Scout as his champion, we were royally fucked, because Scout was the only one of us smart enough to prove Blake was behind everything.

Son of a bitch.

Chapter Fourteen

~Max~

“I brought you some ice,” Seamus said when he walked into my room holding an ice pack in his hand. “Zane forced some painkillers on me if you need one.”

“The ice will be fine, thanks,” I said, snagging the pack and placing it gently against my eye. “How is your arm?”

“It’s fine,” he lied before popping a pill and dropping onto the bed next to me. “Aren’t we quite the pair?”

“Dude, if I had to guess who was going to be the first of the squad to punch me in the face, Scout would have been at the bottom of the list.” I couldn’t help chuckling softly.

“Would I have been at the top?” he asked, grinning over at me.

“Number one, baby,” I assured him. “So, what do you think Raptor and Scout are talking about right now?”

He burst out laughing and I joined in. What a fucking mess we were all in.

“Honestly,” Seamus said after a minute. “I don’t know what Raptor could say to Scout to fix this. Because Scout’s not wrong. Rap pushed that kid away for years. Scout has every right to move on.”

“That’s true,” I agreed. “But not with Richard Blake.”

“Well, no,” Seamus said, rolling his eyes. “Then again, Scout doesn’t know what we now know.”

“I think he does,” I said softly.

“What do you mean?” Seamus’ brows furrowed as he stared at me.

“I think Brian found something,” I admitted. “Why else would he be so defensive? I think he’s afraid to admit it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he knows Blake is involved in this.”

“That’s fucked up.” Seamus shook his head. “There’s no way Scout covers for a terrorist. I don’t care how long they were in foster care together.”

“I know,” I said. “But Scout’s had it hard, man. And something he said just…it makes me wonder is all.”

“What did he say?”

“He said he’s just trying to eek out a little bit of happiness for once in his life.” I let out a slow breath. “And there I was accusing the only person who’s always been there for him.” I rolled my tongue against the back of my teeth as if I could rid myself of the taste those words left in my mouth. “But…we’ve always been there for him. Phoenix has always protected him.”

“Except before we knew him,” Seamus said. “So you think Richard Blake is holding something over him. Manipulating him.”

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “But I don’t fucking like it.”

“Me, either,” Seamus said. “So what do we do?”

“We catch the bastard,” I insisted. “And Rap and Scout will figure it out. Or they won’t. But Blake doesn’t get a pass just because Scout cares about him.” I looked over at Seamus again and smiled. “Would you protect me?”

“What…if you were a criminal mastermind?”

“We’re all criminal masterminds,” I scoffed. “That’s how we got recruited.”

“Not me,” he insisted. “I came about this shit honestly. You and Scout were the ones who were going to work with us or go to jail.”

“Hey! I was an Army medic, and a sharpshooter…and I was kidding,” I snapped. Though, there had been a fair amount of trouble in my youth, before the military straightened me out. “You were a fucking car thief.”
