“They want to get that half a day in, so they can bill your insurance,” I joke.

“God, if that’s not the truth. Are you going to come spring me out of this joint?” he asks, hopefully.

“Better than that, I’ll even bring you breakfast.”

“The only breakfast I want is my head buried between your legs, Baby.”

“Let’s save that until we get home. I’m not sure that’s something I want to do in a hospital room with nurses coming in and out at will.” I laugh as I hear his groan.

“God, Baby. Come get me. Tonight you’re parking that sweet ass on my face.”

“But you’re sore—”

“I’llneverbe that fucking sore,” he moans and that makes me giggle even louder.

“Okay, Sheriff. Let me get off of here and finish getting ready and I’ll be on over.”

“Love you, Junie.”

“Love you, Ben,” I tell him, hanging up.

I towel dry my hair. I really would like to blow dry it, but if I’m honest, I want to get out of this house even more. It just feels weird without Ben with me. I go to my closet and grab a pair of jeans and black t-shirt, wondering if I should dress up more. I decide to go for comfort, Ben won’t care as long as I’m there.

“Hey, honey, I’m home.”

I spin around, feeling my heart jump up into my throat. Then, I scream because standing there in my living room is Greg.

The nightmare isn’t over at all.

Not even close.

Ben

“What time is the medical examiner supposed to call?” I growl, wanting to give Junie good news when she gets here.

Jesus, it feels like I’ve been in this place for a year, instead of just two nights. I can’t wait to get out of here. I look up at the clock. Junie should be here before long. Once I get her back, I’m never letting her out of my sight again.

Gavin’s gaze looks up at the clock and shrugs. “Probably any minute. I told him it was urgent. Listen, Kingston, I know better than anyone why you’re doing it, but in this case, it might be overkill. There was a body in a car that you saw Juniper’s ex driving just minutes earlier,” he reminds me of something I already know.

“I might have thought that way once, too. Then, your brother came back from the dead and people from my town were helping him left and right—even your fucking partner. I swear it feels like we’re living in a fucking horror movie in this town lately. I should grab Junie and move to a private island somewhere while I can,” I mumble.

“You just want a reason to take my sister somewhere and keep her in a bikini all the time,” Lodge says, shaking his head.

“A lot you know. I’d keep her naked.”

“I should have killed you when I had the chance,” he growls, making me laugh.

“Fuck, that hurts,” I mumble, as pain slices through me.

“That’s what you get,” Gavin says, then he sighs. “You realize these tests probably won’t come back one hundred percent. The remains were pretty charcoaled,” he warns.

“I know, but hopefully, it will be enough to put Junie at ease. I hate seeing that fear in her eyes,” I confess.

“Yeah, I do too,” he agrees. “Maybe—” he stops when his phone rings. After giving me a look , he answers, putting it on speakerphone, so I can hear too. Damn it, I’m really just going to have to give it up and admit I like the motherfucker.

“This is Detective Lodge,” Gavin says.

I cock my eyebrow up at him in question and mouth the word, “Detective?” He shrugs, ignoring me.
