“Hey, Lodge. I was calling you back with the test results your office requested,” the voice says.

“I appreciate that, Doctor Berrenger. I know you put a lot of cases on the back-burner to help us.”

“You’re welcome, it didn’t take that long. I did warn you that with the heat of the explosion and the subsequent fire that the genetic markers could be impossible to identify,” the doctor hedges, and I groan under my breath. That’s not the response I wanted to hear, and I can tell by the look on Gavin’s face, he agrees.

“I know,” Gavin finally says. “I was just hoping that we might have something I could tell my sister to help her sleep at night.”

“About that, I’m afraid I don’t have very good news,” the doctor says and hope bottoms out.

“Shit, there was no DNA you could find?” Gavin says, resignation in his voice as he looks at me.

“On the contrary, we got a really good sample—well good considering the shape of the body.”

My brow creases, and I clear my throat.

“I don’t understand, Doctor. I thought you said you didn’t have good results?”

“Doctor, this is Sheriff Kingston,” Gavin explains when there’s silence.

“Oh, hello, Sheriff Kingston, I hope you’re feeling better,” the doctor says, annoying me.

“I would feel great if you’d just tell me that the asshole who has been terrorizing my fiancé is dead.”

“That’s just it. I can’t do that. I mean, the tests are clearly not one hundred percent for certain, but the DNA test we ran says that there’s only twenty percent certainty that the DNA we extract from the body is that of your suspect.”

“Twenty percent,” I hiss.

“I wish I had better news for you, but I’m afraid it’s my professional opinion that the body in the car is not that of the man you gave me the hair samples from.”

Fuck.

“Thanks, Doctor. We’ll be in touch,” Gavin says, but I already have my phone to my ear, trying to call Junie.

It begins ringing… and ringing…and ringing.

“There’s no answer,” I growl, sitting up in bed.

“Maybe she forgot her phone at home?”

“Junie never leaves her phone,” I mutter, already walking out of the room.

“I was afraid you’d say that. I’ll drive.”

“Just hurry,” I demand, walking to the elevator. It hurts like hell, but I got a woman I need to save.

My heart thunders in my chest and cold clammy sweat springs out over my body.

I just hope I’m not too late.

Junie

“Get the fuck out of here!” I scream, my heart thundering in my chest. Greg just laughs.

“Did you really think you were going to get away from me, Juniper? I told you once long ago, and I honestly don’t think you believed me. You are never going to get away from me. I own you,” he brags, making me sick to my stomach.

“I don’t belong to you,” I deny, and I never did. He was an escape for me if anything. I was just too stupid to kick him to the curb sooner. I back up against my dresser slowly, my gaze never leaving Greg. So far, he hasn’t moved, but that doesn’t make me feel better. I need some way to distract him until I can find a weapon. Why the fuck couldn’t he have cornered me in the kitchen where I at least could get a knife to defend myself?

“Are you thinking of fighting me, Juniper? Have you forgotten how well that worked for you in the past?” he asks, turning my stomach.
