“You’ve been gone too long, Nova. Hurry.”

“Just give me a sec—” I stopped talking and lowered my phone as voices came from down the hallway. Oh, fuck. “Hold on, someone’s coming.” Maybe they weren’t coming into this room though. Maybe it was just security. Maybe—I heard Ryzen’s voice and my heart dropped. “It’s Ryzen.”

“Fuck,” Cian hissed. “Hide, Nova.” His breath was shaky, and I realized that I was about to be totally fucked if Ryzen found me in his office. I yanked out the flash drive, shoving it down my cleavage, and put my phone back in my garter. I pushed the screen of the laptop down and looked around the room.

Panic was running through my body and up my spine. There was a closet. Or under the desk. No, they could find me easily if they came in here. Someone tugged on the doors, then said a slew of cuss words when they realized it was locked. The sound of keys jingling had me sprinting across the room to the only other door. I stepped in and shut it quietly behind me.

“I’m in the bathroom. What should I do?” God, why was I so fucking impulsive sometimes? I should have listened to Cian. Grabbed the flash drive and gone. But no, I hadn’t listened, and now here I was.

It’s OK. Take a deep breath, bitch.

“You’re not doing anything wrong. You just came up to use the bathroom. That’s all. Turn on the faucet and start singing.”

“What?” I hissed.

“Sing. Be natural. Just do it, now.”

I turned on the faucet, running my hands under the cold water. “‘Beautiful moon, so bright and white, won’t you be my lucky date tonight?’”

“Keep going, you’re doing great, Nova. Keep singing and walk out naturally.”

My heart slammed against my chest as I heard the doors to the office swing open. “He’s coming,” I whispered. My whole body was on the verge of shutting down. Never in a million years had I experienced as much fear as I did in that moment.

“‘Love me wrong, love me right, you belong to the night.’” I hummed the rest of the song and flung the door open as the footsteps approached.

“Holy shit, Ryzen! You scared me half to death.” I reached up to my throat instinctively.

He towered over me, his jaw clenched. “What are you doing in here, Nova?”

I stepped around him and chuckled, my laugh coming out forced. “Using the bathroom, silly. Am I missing all the fun?” My back was to him, and I dug my nails into my palms. He spun me around and I gasped, his eyes dark.

“You shouldn’t be in here.” His eyes searched my face, and I tried to relax my expression.

“Oh, sorry. You know I couldn’t stop thinking about your medieval knight over here.” I nodded my head in the direction of the metal uniform. “And I wanted to send a picture to Juliet. She’ll get a kick out of it. And, well, nature called.”

Please believe me. Please believe me.

He was silent, glancing over at the knight, then back to me. The silence in the room stretched, the tension growing, and I knew that I had no other choice.

“You know, that knight is pretty sexy.” I trailed my fingers up his chest. “Maybe we should try some roleplaying. I’ll be the damsel in distress, and you can be my knight in shining armor.”

He quirked his eyebrow, his arms wrapping around me. “Sounds kinky. And I like kinky.” He smashed his lips to mine, his tongue pressing forward, and I opened my mouth. Not because I wanted to, but because I had to. This was a life-or-death moment as far as I was concerned, and if that meant kissing the son of a bitch, then I had to do it.

I pulled back, breathless. “Wow, well, let’s get this party over with so we can start our own party in your bedroom.” My palms were sweating, and I rubbed them down my dress. “C’mon, you sexy knight. Let’s go back downstairs.” He let me grip his hand in mine and tug him towards the door. We were almost out the doors when he stopped and turned around.

“Let me turn this light off.” He walked over to the desk and was about to flick the lamp switch, but froze, staring down at the ground.

No, not at the ground, at the drawer that was half open still. His face twisted in anger as he reached under, searching for, I could only assume, the flash drive that was stuffed between my breasts. His movements were jerky, frantic, and then he noticed the laptop and opened it up all the way, his eyes widening.

“You bitch,” he snarled.

“He knows,” I whispered, and Cian yelled into my earpiece, but I couldn’t understand what he was saying. All I could focus on was Ryzen and the murderous look in his eyes. He flung the lamp across the room.

“Where the fuck is it?” He took another step forward.

Adrenaline pumped through me, and when he took another step closer, I used all my strength to push the knight over. It crashed at his feet. That was all the distraction I needed as I ran out the doors and slammed them shut. I took off the belt from my dress and wrapped it around the handles, taking a step back. The doors shook, Ryzen yelling from the other side. He was enraged like I had never seen before. I turned to go down the hall, but one of his security guards was coming around the corner, so I hauled ass in the other direction.

“Nova, what’s happening? Please answer me,” Cian pleaded, and I pumped my legs faster.
