“I got away; I’m running,” I gasped as I found a narrow hallway with stairs leading down. I took them two at a time, almost breaking my neck as I flew to the bottom and ended up in the back kitchen. A group of servers stared at me with their mouths open, and I pushed through them until I found the back door. Cold air blasted me in the face as I ran, then turned the corner. Valik was leaning against his car, and I yelled his name.

“Valik, drive!” I screamed and his eyes widened as I approached. “Get in the fucking car and drive.”

I threw open the back door and jumped in, and he hopped in, starting the engine. “Nova, what the fuck is going on?”

“Just go, go now.” I looked over my shoulder and tried to control my breathing when I didn’t see anyone behind us.

A walkie-talkie beeped, and a panicked voice came over the line. “Do not let Miss La Roux leave the premises. I repeat, do not let Miss La Roux leave. She is considered armed and possibly dangerous.”

We were silent for a moment, both our chests heaving as we stared at each other through the rear-view mirror. Before he could say anything, I reached down and pulled out my knife, and held it against his neck. “Do not fucking move, Valik.”

His eyes were as big as saucers, and he held his hands up. “Nova, what are you doing? You don’t want to do this.”

“You’re right, Valik. I didn’t want to do any of this. But here we fucking are. Throw the walkie-talkie on the dashboard.”

He pulled it from a clip on his belt and tossed it onto the dash.

“Now your gun.”

“Nova, you’re not going to hurt me. Just tell me what’s going on so I can help you.” His voice was pleading, but I couldn’t trust him. Couldn’t trust anyone who worked for Ryzen. I pushed the blade into his throat, a drop of blood forming at the tip.

“Never underestimate a desperate woman. Now give me or your gun, or I’ll fucking cut your throat.” My voice was low, controlled, and in that moment, I could see the fear in his eyes. He knew I was serious.

He reached his hand down and I put more pressure on the knife, a hiss coming from him as blood dripped down his neck. He pulled it out and I snatched it from his hand, pointing it at his head. “Get out, now.” I turned off the safety, my hand trembling.

“OK, OK. I’m going.” He opened the door and stepped out and I climbed over the front seat, slamming the door in his face.

Static came over the walkie-talkie, a frantic voice saying, “She’s out back, go get her!”

I pressed my foot on the gas and sped down the dirt road.

Fuck, fuck, fuck!

“Nova, speak to me, please. What’s going on?”

“I got a car. I can’t see shit out here. I’m on a different road. It’s not the one we came in on.”

“Fuck, OK, hold on. I’m pulling the map up. OK, do you see a creek nearby?”

I reached up and tugged my seatbelt on, the car flying down the road. I didn’t know why they always made car chases look so fun on television. There was nothing fun about this. I was going so fast, the car swerving all over the place. A huge boulder appeared out of nowhere and I swerved, shrieking as the back of the car spun out of control for a moment. There was a creek to my right, and I said a silent prayer. “I see it on my right, now what?”

“The main road is three miles south. Just keep going and take a right when you get there and that will take you to the highway a few miles down. I’m coming, little star, I promise, just get to the highway.”

Lights flashed behind me, and I gasped as a set of headlights raced towards me. How had they gotten to me so fast?Just focus, Nova. Two minutes and then you’ll be there. Two minutes and you’ll be safe.I slammed my foot on the gas and held my breath. “Someone’s coming, Cian. But I think I can make it. I think I can get to the main road… I can see the lig—”

I screamed louder than I had ever before as a huge tree log lay in the middle of the dirt road. It was too late; I was going way too fast to stop or to swerve. I didn’t stand a fucking chance and I slammed into the log at full speed. My head was spinning as I realized I was up in the air, the car upside down as I went flying, and then… darkness.

*****

Lips were on mine, blowing air into my mouth. I wanted to scream and beg for death as pain ripped through my entire body, but I couldn’t move. I couldn’t speak. It was just utter and total darkness with voices yelling around me.

“I want that bitch alive.”

Ryzen.

He’d gotten me.
