Martin smiled and shook his head before putting the privacy screen back up.

“Alex, that’s wonderful.” Grace took my hand.

Blake did the same, but she still looked wary. “Why do you look so panicked by it?”

“I haven’t been in love in a long time. I had a very messy divorce, and I’m still dealing with my ex. I wasn’t expecting to meet anyone, let alone fall in love with two men.”

“Oh, honey. We never expected to fall for our men either, but we did.” They all nodded at Jessie’s comment.

“I know, but it’s scary, and now that I know, I don’t want to think about it. Not until I have a chance to talk to them in person. Can we please change the topic? I need to process this a bit more.”

“Of course, but don’t think we’ll totally let this go,” Blake teased.

We turned up the radio and sang loudly and off key until Martin stopped to grab us coffee at the place I recommended. We were having so much fun I lost track of time. When Martin pulled into the shopping center, we couldn’t help but groan as we got out and stretched our cramped muscles. We may have been in a limo, but it still sucked to sit for three hours straight.

It was decided that we would get lunch first and then shop. No one wanted to try on clothes when they were hungry. Especially when Grace declared she was getting hangry, and she wouldn’t be a fun shopping companion until she had food in her stomach.

The city was big and loud. I quickly realized I didn’t miss it one bit. I loved that I was in a small town, away from the hustle and bustle.

When we finally entered a store I thought was too expensive, Blake and Grace started pulling dresses off the racks left and right. Jessie disappeared only to return with an assistant who was going to help us. I’d never stepped foot inside this store, knowing it was outside my price range and was shocked to see how huge it was. It had two stories filled with high-end clothing.

“I got one of my dresses here the last time I went shopping. I figured we could start here and see where it gets us.” Jessie started pulling dresses from the racks too.

“What are we looking for, ladies?” the store assistant asked. She was wearing a stylish black dress, paired with expensive heels and jewelry that screamed money.

“We have a gala in LA in two weeks. We need dresses for me and Alex.” She pointed to me.

“Let me get your measurements. I will have room one and two set aside for you. Anything you find, you can bring there. I will pull a few from the back as well and bring some choices from around the store.” She gestured toward the changing rooms. “I’ll have a bottle of champagne brought over for you.”

“Wow. Thank you. That’s so kind of you.” I glanced at Jessie with wide eyes.

Jessie just grinned.

“I’m here to help you in any way I can. Let’s see if we can find you a dress, and then we can work on shoes and accessories if needed.” She smiled and then disappeared.

“This is unbelievable,” I said, with a disbelieving shake of my head. I was used to shopping at big box stores, not places I was waited on.

I walked past the nearest rack and rifled through the fabrics. Some were silky, others had lace or sequins. I chose a simple long black dress with a modest neckline. Searching through another set, I pulled a navy one with some sparkles.

“Let’s go try them on.” Jessie’s voice filtered through the maze of racks.

“Coming.” I only had two dresses. I couldn’t imagine she’d found more.

I walked to the dressing area to find Grace and Blake sitting in front of a staging area with glasses of bubbly in their hands. Rooms one and two were just to the side.

“Which one is mine?”

“You are in room two.” The assistant pulled the curtain back. I gasped. There were dresses hung on every available hook.

“There must be a mistake. I only have these two.” I lifted my arm with the dresses draped over it.

“No mistake. These are the ones we picked for you. Go on. Try them on.” Blake tilted her glass to me.

I stepped inside and was completely overwhelmed with all the options, but excited too. I hadn’t been able to go crazy and just try on fancy things since picking out my wedding dress. And even then, I had to be modest with my low budget.

The first dress I tried on was the black one I’d picked out. When I modeled it for the girls, I was met with their unenthused responses.Thinking about the other dress I’d chosen, I realized they were both too plain.

“Okay fine. Let’s do this.” I grabbed my glass and downed it in three gulps.
