As soon as Arthur pulls up in his silver car I know something is wrong. His expression isn’t that of the usually levelheaded and collected Hatt Leader.

Having picked up on that as well, Liam grumbles, “The fuck happened to him?”

I just shake my head because I have no idea.

When Lupa and Arthur exit the car with matching expressions, I have a pretty good idea what this is about. My blood boils at the fucking audacity, and, yeah, at my fucking oversight. Of course this is about Morgana.

“The answer is no,” I state darkly.

At the same time Arthur growls, “Where is she?”

“Who?” I ask even though I know who he means.

“Why the fuck is your wife keeping my sister from me?” Arthur bites. I notice his hands shaking with the same anger that’s making his tone sound more like an animalistic growl. “I want to see her. You have no right to—”

I silence him with a snarl. “Stop it right fucking there, Arthur. Don’t forget who you’re speaking to. If I want to keep Morgana locked up, you have to assume I have my reasons.”

“P-please,” Lupa stutters before she curtsies in front of me.

Sighing, I say, “Get up.” Then I turn my gaze back on the irate Hatt. “Morgana isn’t here.”

The words barely leave me before he thrusts his phone in my face. I blink uncomprehendingly as I read the latest messages from Morgana.

Morgana: Calm down, bro. I’m at Cia’s and she won’t let me go.

Instead of bothering to read Arthur’s side of the conversation, I focus on his sister’s.

Morgana: It’s not too bad here. I can’t leave but at least I’m not in chains.

“She isn’t here,” Liam exclaims, making it clear he’s reading over my shoulder. “But you better come inside.”

I’m too fucking dumbstruck to be able to find words as we head back inside, and if it wasn’t for Liam I’d probably just slam the door in their faces and write it off as a stupid prank. But that’s just wishful thinking, isn’t it?

“I have texts as well,” Lupa says while pulling out her own phone. “I haven’t seen her in two weeks. At first I thought she might be upset with me, but then when she finally replied it didn’t sound like her. Her tone was off, but her excuses made sense.”

She inhales sharply while showing me her text thread. While I have no idea if they sound like Morgana or not I know the messages are lies. The ones where she claims to be with Arthur, I was spending time with the Hatt Leader. And then again the fucking claim of being here with Nereid.

There’s no way this is a coincidence.

Someone sent Arthur and Lupa here.

Chapter 19

Cia

“What’sgoingon?”Iwheeze out.

My breath is coming out in pants and I clutch my sides to stop myself from doubling over. Gods, if this doesn’t prove how out of shape I am, I don’t know what will. I was in the middle of riding Gus when Kai called. I still don’t know why I picked it up, gut feeling, perhaps. The second he mentioned that Arthur and Lupa were here, I know I’m going to owe Gus an orgasm—and Kai is going to owe me ten for this interruption.

“Your hair…” Lupa sounds incredulous as she points at my much shorter and even brighter strands.

I frown because those are not the first words I imagined her saying to me. I mean, I counted her as a really close friend—hell, best friend if I’m being honest. Yet, after one, admittedly big, fuck up on my part, we’ve barely talked at all.

“Hello to you too,” I sniff, unable to keep my attitude in check.

“Enough!” Arthur explodes, and for the first time I look at him.

His hair is in complete disarray and he looks like he hasn’t slept in days.
