“Don’t.” Kai’s growl is low and menacing, anger rolling off him in thick waves.

As though the sound was uttered by Eros himself, my nipples pebble at the possessive streak my husband displays.

“Don’t fucking come into our home and speak to her like that.” Fuck me, if my husband doesn’t stop, I’m going to spontaneously combust.

I shake my head in an attempt at banishing all lustful thoughts. “What are you doing here, Arthur?” Yeah, I’m petty enough to aim the question directly at him without including Lupa. “Are you okay?”

“Where’s Morgana?” he asks, completely ignoring my question.

The venom in his tone and eyes has me taking half a step back. “I don’t know,” I say with a frown. “She told me she was staying at yours because she needed some time alone after the attack.”

When the Hatt Leader glares like he’s trying to catch me in a lie, I unlock my phone and show him the message thread.

“See,” I point at the missed calls like he needs a show and tell. “She wouldn’t pick up the phone, so I began texting her instead.”

I slowly scroll through the thread, making sure he has time to read all the messages—both the ones from me and the ones from Morgana.

“This makes no sense.” There’s a hint of defeat in Arthur’s tone, and I don’t like it one bit.

“What’s going on?” I ask again, sterner this time. “Someone needs to start talking.”

Liam quickly fills me in on Lupa and Arthur showing up out of the blue because they think Morgana is here.

“Here?” I echo.

“Is she here or not?” Arthur seethes.

“Not,” I simply say.

Again, it’s like I’m the nymph Echo, cursed by the Olympians to always repeat the last word spoken by those around me. Grinding my teeth, I force myself to say more.

“She isn’t here, Arthur. As you can see, I thought she was with you.”

Growling low in his throat, Arthur pulls at his hair. “If you really thought that, then why the fuck didn’t you come to check up on her? She might have gotten injured in the attack here.”

I bristle at the accusation in his tone. “Why on earth would I track her down when she clearly needed time?” I volley. Mentally, I’m trying to work out if I should have done something differently. But no matter how I look at it, I thought I was doing what Morgana wanted. “There was no reason not to believe her.” My words are softer now, imploring him to calm down and understand.

“We fell for it as well, Arthur,” Lupa says, finally speaking up.

“This is planned,” Gus says.

I whirl around and immediately demand, “What do you mean?”

It annoys me that Liam and Kai nod like the three of them have pieced something together that I haven’t.

“Right, let’s see all the phones,” Liam suggests. Then he points at the kitchen counter. “Line them up and we’ll all go through them.”

We follow Liam’s suggestion, lining up the phones. And as I look from one device to another, it finally clicks.

“You were sent here,” I gasp. “But why? By who?”

The whimper coming from Lupa has me forgetting my pettiness, and I pull her into a hug. I’m relieved when she hugs me back. We don’t speak, just hold each other until Kai clears his throat.

“When did you last see Morgana?” he asks, looking between Arthur and Lupa.

Arthur is the first to answer. “The day before the attack.”

“That morning,” Lupa adds. “I haven’t seen her since.”
