Guilt gnaws at me as I realize Morgana has been gone for two weeks, and not a single one of us knew she was missing. We each made up excuses and reasons in our head, content in the lie. But that’s the proof of a formidable story, isn’t it? Spinning it so well people believe it.

“In my opinion there are only two plausible reasons for getting us all under one roof,” Liam says coolly. “It would be the best way to take us all out, so let’s call that option one. The other is that it’s a helping hand, someone wanting to lead us towards the answers.”

Picking up Lupa’s phone, I read and re-read the texts over and over. If Liam is right about option one, we really need to get out of here. If it’s door number two, the answer could be staring us in the face. But without knowing the right question I’m not sure we’d be able to recognize it.

“Scroll back up,” Gus says as he leans closer. I swipe my thumb upwards. “Stop.”

I read the text that seemingly caught his attention. Well that’s…

“Lupa?” She stops whatever she was saying to Arthur and turns to me. “Do either you or Morgana use contraception?”

Her cheeks turn pink and red tints her neck as she sputters, “Excuse me?”

Arthur, Liam, and Kai immediately move closer.

“This text here,” I point as I put the phone back on the counter so we can all see it. “It mentions that she needs to have her implant removed. I know it’s awkward to talk about, but I really need to know.”

Her eyes flutter shut for a brief moment, before she meets my gaze head on. “Of course we don’t use contraception. It’s not like either of us can get pregnant.”

I nod slowly as my brain pieces the implications together. “That message was for me,” I whisper.

“Someone sent it to the wrong person?” Arthur asks, confused.

“N-no,” I stutter. “I’m pretty sure it was sent to Lupa on purpose, just as I’m now thinking it’s a clue as to why you’re all here.”

I turn around and look at each of my men, silently asking them if they think I’m right. When all three of them nod, I feel better about my assumption. It’s just the only thing that makes sense, especially considering that whatever is hiding in my arm isn’t an implant.

Letting out an audible breath I pull my beloved knife, Mizéria, from my sleeve where I quickly hid it after Kai called. Arthur and Lupa take a step back, like they think I’m going to stab them. But I don’t pay them any attention.

“Will you do the honor?” I ask, holding the blade between two fingers as I move the hilt towards Gus.

He swallows audibly, taking the knife from me. “Of course,” he rasps.

“What the fuck—”

Arthur’s question dies on his lips as Gus quickly cuts through the sleeve of my shirt. As soon as my arm is bared, he makes quick work of slicing the blade across my skin.

“Cia!” Lupa cries.

Gritting my teeth, I reply, “It’s fine. I think…” I hiss in pain as Gus tries to push the implant out.

“Get me some fucking pliers or something,” Gus barks.

Lupa quickly jumps into action and removes her bag from her shoulder. “Hang on,” she says while rummaging through it. I count to fifty in Greek while she pulls out a small toilet pouch and pulls a pair of tweezers from it.

“Those need to be sterilized,” Kai growls when Gus reaches for them.

Arthur clears his throat, and I tilt my head in his direction. “So what are your plans for summer?” he asks conversationally.

I arch a brow at him, but I regret the small action right away. He’s clearly trying to distract me from what’s going on, and I appreciate that.

“Probably sleeping in.” I force myself to sound upbeat. “Maybe a trip to Italy since I’ve had a craving for Gelato and Tiramisu.”

The Hatt Leader chuckles. “Yeah, me too. Maybe I should bring Gwenda and we can make it a four… umm, sixsome.”

Even though it’s not funny, I burst out laughing. Said laughter dies when I feel Gus sliding the tweezers into the cut in my arm, digging around for the fake implant.

“Motherfucker!” I scream.
