CHAPTER1

KAT

Ipulled the popcorn out of the microwave and walked over to my living room where Lily was waiting with a remote in hand. We tried to hang out often. It's been a thing since we became friends while she was in college and we took dance classes together. We quickly became friends and have been inseparable ever since.

Even with the struggles of adulthood and what we have going on, not a week goes by that we don't see each other.

She showed up to my apartment with news of a job opening at Blue Trekk. Yes, I was in desperate need of a job since I had bills to settle, but I wasn't sure that I wanted THAT job.

I knew that I shouldn't be picky, considering that it was an opportunity that would actually be beneficial. The salary was twice what I earned at my old job where I used to write articles and exposés for a magazine website for a living.

Lily had always looked out for me despite our very different backgrounds. She was born into a very comfortable home and with a silver spoon in her mouth. She grew up with loving grandparents and a father that loved her to bits.

It didn't take long for me to find out that Lily was spoiled, but in a good way. If the high end expensive labels on her clothes didn't give it away, her credit card usage did. But despite everything, she remained the most genuine and down to earth person that I had ever met.

I, on the other hand, had a different story. I grew up on what you would call ‘the wrong side of the tracks’. I had a single mother who worked two jobs and did her best to cater to my needs. She passed the week before my eighteenth birthday.

I set the snacks between us and joined her on the sofa.

"Hear me out, babe, what do you have to lose? And you are not in the position to be turning down job offers."

"I know that. It's just that I have met your dad once and trust me that was enough."

She threw her head back in laughter. "He is not that bad. I mean, I'm not going to lie, I see it sometimes, but I don't think meeting him once is enough to make you wary of him."

"It felt like he was staring into my soul. You have his eyes, but I'm used to it with you. He takes it to a whole other level."

"You'd get used to it once you see him often enough. I already spoke to my dad and he has agreed to hire you."

"You did not!" I exclaimed.

"Yes, I did. You start on Monday." She grabbed the remote from me like it was nothing, like she didn't just make a major decision for me.

"Doesn't he need to evaluate me first?"

"Does this mean that you will take it?"

"I didn't say that," I shut her down before she got too excited.

"He took my word for it. I asked him for a favor, okay?"

"So I should stop complaining and thank you. Lily, honestly, I am grateful. I'm just a bit nervous, you know? I don’t want to disappoint you." I ran my hand through my hair.

"You can't," she stated, pointing the remote at me in a scolding manner. "I seem to know your capacity more than you do. You are a fast learner and you have the drive for success. That is all you need. And it's not a complicated job- sort of."

"Oh, God!" I groaned, burying my face in a throw pillow from the couch.

"You will be fine." She patted my back. "Now that that is sorted, let's just agree that you owe me one and get on with the movie?"

"Fine! I do. Thank you so much." I hugged her.

"Oh, please!" She tried to wiggle out of my arms, but I held her tighter.

"You will get a call from someone in Human Resources. She will let you know what you need to come with to work on Monday and they will set you up."

"You’re the best."

"I know."
