I couldn’t afford to be left out again. I was finally getting my groove back, getting back on my feet. I don't want to lose that, but even through all of that, I don't want to lose George.

CHAPTER11

GEORGE

The clicking of Kat's keyboard was almost getting drowned out by the sound of the traffic that was coming from the streets below. The air was cold and crisp from the air conditioning in the office. The night sky was dark and threatening to rain again for the umpteenth time that day.

It kept drizzling for most of the day and it looked like it was about to resume said activity again after only a short break.

My eyes slid to the clock on my table seeing that it was a few minutes past nine. I realized that I had stayed too long working. I switched my gaze to Kat, who was busy typing away on a laptop. She didn't seem to notice me staring at her.

Left to me, I could still be here for some two or three more hours. I'm used to working this late and because I usually don't have anything to go back to, I don't mind. But I wasn't comfortable leaving Kat to work for so long, especially when she hadn’t had dinner yet.

I've heard her stomach rumble twice and I didn’t want to be the bastard who kept her working for so long and starved her at the same time.

It was the end of the month and I was reviewing the report from different departments. Normally, I didn’t keep her working with me this late or sometimes I just took the work home with me, but today I was a bit selfish. I wanted to spend more time with her. I was only working at half my speed as my mind kept drifting to the beautiful woman across from me.

She had gotten herself comfortable while working, taking off her heels under the table and sometimes she would tap her legs or bite her lip, very distracting movements that made me lose focus of all of my work.

Coming to the conclusion that I wasn't going to do much work any longer, not with her tempting me like that and me not being able to do anything about it, I decided to shut things down.

"Let's call it a night," I said.

"Really? I'm not done. I still have a few more to go." She looked up at me.

"So do I, but at this rate, we are going to be here all night and I don't think that would be fair to you."

"It is my job as your assistant to assist you."

"Yes, it is, but it is my job as your boss to look after you. So in that light, let me buy you dinner. I know you haven't eaten anything all night and you must be hungry. Let me buy you a meal to say thank you."

She frowned. “You know you don't have to thank me, right? I am doing my job and you are paying me for the extra hours, so I don't mind."

"Do you want to be away from me that much? Is that what this is?" I asked her. "Because for me, it's quite the opposite." I wanted to eat, yes, but I also wanted to spend more time with her.

Having her around me, especially this close, was starting to affect me, but in a positive way. It had a calming effect on me and I don't know how I was supposed to deal with it. I just knew that I liked it and it made me happy.

"I'm not trying to get away from you. This has nothing to do with any of that." She waved her hand frantically in front of me. "It’s just- I just thought that I didn't want to put you in a position where you feel like you have to do something for me because I stayed late at work."

"If that is what you’re worried about, then you don't have to be worried. I'm not usually that inclined to people's emotions enough to care about what happens to them. I want to buy you dinner as a way of saying thank you. I also want to buy you dinner because I want to have a conversation with you, a proper conversation, maybe get to know you a little bit."

Her mouth fell open and she tried to speak but no words came out. Did I surprise her that much?

"Are you shocked at my words?"

"A little, yes." She nodded. "I just didn't think that you would want that with me. This is not a date, right?" she clarified.

"No, it isn't. If I wanted to go out on a date with you, I would ask you properly. I am not one to shy away from a challenge, Kat. As a matter of fact, I like it, but I don't think that you being exhausted and hungry from work is a perfect opportunity to ask you out on a date. Plus, I am still weighing my options when it comes to that."

"You are very honest."

"I have no reason to do otherwise."

"Okay, so if you say it's just dinner, then fine. I am a little hungry."

"Good. I know the perfect place to go." I get up from my chair.

We aren't going out on an official date, but I still wanted her to have a good time. I wanted her to have a good experience. I decided to take her to one of my acquaintance's restaurants.
