“Lily baby, are you in there?” I asked. There was silence for a few seconds before she yelled.

“Go away!”

“Lily, I know you’re hurt but I promise you that was never my intention.”

“Go away, dad!” she yelled again.

I sighed and turned around, walking to Lily’s room where we had placed Kat. As soon as I opened the door, a sudden realization struck me like a bolt of lightning—Kat was nowhere to be found. She was not on the bed. I headed straight for the bathroom but she wasn’t there.

Panic surged through my veins, my heart pounding in my chest. I called out her name, my voice echoing through the empty rooms, but there was no response, only the haunting silence that seemed to mock my fears. The house, once filled with warmth and familiarity, now felt cold and unfamiliar, as if it had swallowed her presence whole.

My mind raced, thoughts colliding in a chaotic frenzy. Where could she have gone? What could have driven her away? Anxiety gnawed at my insides, threatening to unravel the fragile thread of composure I clung to.

I retraced my steps, frantically searching every corner, every room. But there was no trace of her, no sign of her hurried departure. It was as if she had vanished into thin air, leaving behind only a void that grew deeper with each passing second.

Doubts crept into my mind, filling me with a toxic blend of fear and guilt. Had I done something to push her away? Was there something I had missed, some sign of her growing discontent? The weight of my own insecurities threatened to suffocate me, threatening to drown out any hope of finding her.

I raced to the guest room where Lily was and banged on the door. A very enraged Lily opened the door for me.

“Dad! What’s going on? Are you trying to break the door down?” she seethed.

“I cannot find Kat. Did she leave the house?” I asked her as she rolled her eyes.

“Where could she have possibly gone? Did you check the bathroom? Or maybe even the yard,” she asked.

I had checked everywhere and there was still no sign of Kat.

“I’ve checked everywhere,” I said as I saw the look of concern flash through Lily’s eyes, but she immediately masked her emotions.

“Maybe she went back to her apartment,” Lily said.

“Really, Lily? Call her.”

“You don’t have your own girlfriend’s number?” she asked.

“Call Kat, Lily,” I stated.

Lily groaned and walked into the room. Retrieving her phone from the bed she dialed Kat’s number and placed it on speakerphone.

“It’s not connecting. The line is dropping,” Lily said with concern in her tone. “This has never happened before,” she said.

I knew it. I had that feeling after I left Darius’ office. He was too calm for his own good.

I refused to believe that Darius had a hand in Kat’s sudden disappearance. Maybe she actually went back to her apartment.

My phone rang at that exact moment. I looked at the caller ID to see that it was an unknown number. I already knew who was calling.

"George," the familiar voice of Darius sneered through the line, his tone dripping with malevolence. "I believe you've been looking for someone."

My hand formed a fist and I gritted my teeth. "Where is Kat?"

Lily looked at me with an alert expression on her face.

A sinister chuckle emanated from the other end, piercing my ears like a twisted melody. "Ah, George, always so concerned about your precious girlfriend. You really didn’t think you would walk into my office like some mini god and actually expect me to dance to your tunes? Well, let's just say she's in my custody now. Don't worry, she's unharmed... for now."

Rage simmered within me, fueling a surge of adrenaline. "You son of a-"

Darius interrupted me, his voice dripping with sadistic pleasure. "Now, now, George let's not resort to vulgarities. I have a proposition for you. Meet me at the abandoned warehouse on Elm Street in two hours. Come alone or I can't guarantee what will happen to your dear Kat."
