He kissed her hair and ran his hands over her in comfort. “We won’t let that happen.”

Although he didn’t know if he could promise that. “How much does the marshal in charge of your case know about your past?”

“I assume he knows everything. Why?”

“Just thinking it all through. Trying to figure out the best way to move forward.”

A shudder ran through her. “By using me as bait to draw out my grandfather and stop his organization?”

He squeezed her firmly against him even as Jetson snuggled in closer. “No. We’re not putting you at risk. But maybe there’s a way to end this. If we put what I know together with what you know, maybe we can see a way out.”

“I don’t know much.”

She probably knew more than she thought. She was observant and intelligent. While she’d pushed away the memories, she might know enough to help him close the case.

Then he could move on. Out of the FBI and onto Midnight Security. With Tessa right here with him.

Flynn kept his hand moving up and down her back, skimming from her hair to her waist. Soft curls, lithe body. He forced his body not to react by envisioning Tessa being tossed out a window while she was burning.

Holding her felt right. Being with her felt right.

She sighed but didn’t raise her head. “Your turn. Tell me about you.”

“What?”

“I told you my sordid story. Tell me how you ended up as an FBI agent and not a rodeo star or horse trainer.”

She remembered his dreams. “I mostly work out of the Houston office, so I still get to help on the ranch and with any kids wanting to ride the bulls and broncs.”

“You always loved the connections with those animals.”

He chuckled. “Except when the brahma’s horns connected.”

She laughed softly.

It took a few moments to organize his thoughts. “Everything changed that day. They couldn’t tell us answers. They couldn’t tell us who’d attacked your family or even who’d been inside the house. The only person they identified was you.”

Tessa shoved up to look at him, shock obvious on her face. “What? What about my father and my uncle? The others?”

He shook his head. “They said there were two males burned beyond recognition. No one else was found in the debris. The men were presumed to be your father and uncle but no positive identifications were made.”

Tessa blinked and stared at him. He felt her trembling before she shoved off his lap to back away toward the table. “Are you sure that’s what they said? Who said? The police? The press?”

“I’m sure. That’s what was reported to the press by the police. There was a press conference.” How did she not know all this? Hadn’t they told her anything when they’d moved her into Wit Sec?

She was completely spooked and Flynn wanted to pull her back into his arms. He could see her hands trembling as she used them to shove back her hair.

Her wide eyes finally met his. “But it’s not true. Is any of it true?”

Flynn didn’t have a clue. The only part he’d believed had turned out to be false.

“What if they’re not dead?” Her strangled whisper had him swinging his feet off the side of the bed and reaching for her. She shook her head and backed up.

“Slow down, honey. Don’t panic. You’re safe. No one knows where you are. No one can get to you. We’re safe here.”

She shook her head slowly. “You don’t know that. You can’t.”

“You’re right. I’ve doubted parts of the story my whole life. The only part I believed was that you’d been killed. I’m glad that part’s not true, but it makes me wonder what else isn’t true. How many people were in the house with you?”
