Her body stiffened and she thought about moving away from his touch, but his lopsided, sad grin stopped her. “Obviously, I got over that. I was thinking from the viewpoint of a selfish teenage boy. I was so shocked to see you, my emotions went into overdrive. That’s not an excuse, just the truth. It took a sleepless night and maybe a conversation or two with you and Sam to get my head on straight.”

His frown disappeared and he smiled softly. “I lost you once through no fault of our own. I don’t want to lose you again.”

Tessa’s heart swelled and she didn’t bother to resist her desire. She leaned forward and pressed her lips softly to Flynn’s. Then she whispered. “See. The best man I know.”

With a growl that sent shivers of the very best kind over her body, he captured her lips. And most of her brain cells. She leaned into the kiss and Flynn growled again. His hands drifted up her body to cup her face.

His lips were tender and the kiss was gentle. So sweet, she knew she could cry from it.

For long moments, they nipped and sipped, touched and learned. When Flynn slowed and broke the kiss, she leaned back enough to see his face. His smile made her feel lighter, more whole.

“I’ve been wanting to do that since you sat beside me in math. Never thought I’d have the chance.”

Tessa raised an eyebrow. “Seriously?”

His eyes twinkled. “Seriously. I was planning to ask you to go to the Christmas dance with me that day.”

She refused to let the awful memories distract her from this good one. “I would have said yes. I would have said yes to almost anything.”

This time it was Flynn’s eyebrows shooting up. A grin lit up his face. “Good to know. I had a pretty sleepless night back then wondering if you’d agree to be my girlfriend.”

That made her laugh. “You? Nervous? You were the hotshot rodeo star and had every girl in the school wanting to be your date.”

“The only one I wanted was you.”

Her eyes told her he was serious and a thrill ran through her. She hadn’t made the attraction bigger than it had been in order to get through those painful days. He’d really been interested in her nerdy self.

He still was.

They moved at the same time as their lips met in a collision that was less gentle and more demanding.

Without breaking the kiss, Tessa shifted so that she was straddling Flynn as best as her legs would allow her. He growled at the intimate contact and her body reacted to how he’d hardened beneath her.

Flynn’s hands moved to her hips and squeezed, then had her moving, grinding against him. She gasped into the kiss as the sensations filled her.

She ran her fingers up his chest, savoring the muscles beneath his shirt and the strength they implied. Her body never felt strong and she wanted to absorb all that she could from Flynn because the man was strong in all senses of the word.

Flynn broke the kiss and his mouth traveled along her jawline. Her head dropped back of its own accord to give him better access.

Her hands moved over his chest and shoulders, enjoying his reaction to her touch. Every few moments, their lips came together again and again. Each touch built the need and the desire until every part of Tessa was shaking with it.

Flynn’s hands skimmed her ribcage, brushing the sides of her breasts and making her body spiral even tighter. He groaned into her mouth and then he pulled back and rested his forehead against hers. “Holy hell, Tessa, you’re potent.”

His breathing was harsh and ragged. Her own was no better, but knowing he was as affected as she was made her feel powerful. She smiled. “You too.”

His returning smile was full of tenderness and she knew she’d have to tell him.

Tessa felt her face flush, but she forced herself to maintain eye contact. She was an adult and she would act like one. “I’ve never been this close with a man before.”

Flynn’s body reacted instantly. His entire body tightened and his hands flexed where they’d been resting on her hips. “What?”

Her flush deepened but she kept her head up. “I spent a couple of years living in the basement of that hospital. I needed the surgeries and recuperation times and then I needed to learn to walk again.”

Flynn frowned but his hands started moving again. Gently. Tenderly.

“Then I spent at least six months in the towns and cities from my new biography. I’m not a good actress, so I needed to know the places they’d given me in my new background. I had a different last name for those years, but I was already working on making myself into Tessa.”

Flynn shook his head softly. “I can’t imagine how incredibly difficult that was.”
