When they walked to the door, Sam pulled her in for a hug of his own. “You did good, Tess. You all did. Now we can put these guys away and you can get on with your life.”

His words shocked her and she couldn’t do anything but hug him back. Then he turned and headed back to the main room.

Flynn tilted his head. “What is it? You look surprised.”

She smiled at him. A real smile. “I hadn’t thought it through yet. Do you think I can really live a normal life now? Do you think I can stop hiding?”

Flynn cupped her face and kissed her. “That’s the plan.”

“But my grandfather is still out there.”

“Let’s not borrow any trouble yet. We’ve got the man who tried to kill you back then and now. He’s going to spend the rest of his life in prison. I don’t think anyone is going to be stupid enough to try anything else.”

Tessa nodded and walked with Flynn to start the process of dealing with the rest. Hope and dread warred within her.

If her grandfather kept sending people after her, it wasn’t over. Not even close.

Would it ever be?

Flynn signed the last document and dropped the pen. The conference room in the Bedford FBI office was filled with his friends and other agents. Shanice Williams, the lead New Hampshire agent, had invited them to use her space as their temporary office while they dealt with the fallout of the attack on Midnight Lake.

It had taken more than twenty-four hours to get most of the details organized and wrapped up.

Kuzmetzov and the three men he’d brought up from Houston would be transported back with the US Marshals. The local thugs he’d hired would be kept locally. John Tynan, had been a great help in adding yet another law enforcement agency into the mix. This case could be a poster child for interagency cooperation.

Flynn would have to fly to Houston soon and finish out the case with his team. And then he’d tender his resignation and move on to Midnight Security full time. One night without Tessa in his bed had proven to him he was making the right decision.

Mitch and Bella had gone with her to the nearest medical center to get her arm checked out. Then they’d all given their statements to Marcus. Joe and Nico had come with Flynn to New Hampshire. The two-hour drive wasn’t far, but still too far from home.

He pulled out his phone and texted Tessa. How are you feeling?

She sent back a laughing emoji.Same as when you texted an hour ago. I’m fine. How are you doing?

He grinned.Missing you.

Same.

We’ll be wrapping up soon and hope to be back later this afternoon or evening.

Good news. Be safe.

You too.

He hesitated over adding,Love you. But he hadn’t said it out loud to her face yet. He didn’t want the first time he told her to be in a text. He wanted it to be when he had her in his arms, preferably in their bed.

His phone rang while he was thinking about getting Tessa naked. His boss. Clearing his mind, he answered. “Hey Janis.”

“Word about Karlo Kuzmetzov’s arrest has made its way to the locals down here.”

“Already?”

“Never takes long enough. You’ll want to be here sooner rather than later if you want to be in on the conversation with Grigor. We’re going to move on the casino location tonight.”

He couldn’t miss this. “I’ll be there. Once I have a flight, I’ll text you the information.”

A quick check had him swearing. The only flight out of the closest airport left in two hours. Time enough to get to there, but it was in the opposite direction of Midnight Lake. At least he’d grabbed his go-bag from the lodge before he’d left.

As soon as he was in the car, he called Tessa. “I’m sorry, honey. I’ve got to go to Houston. I’m heading to the Manchester airport and I’m on the next plane.”
