“Who’s that, boss?” Jimmy asked, and I shook my head. I moved through the doorway to the front of the house and opened the front doors. I took a couple of steps down and frowned when I saw the familiar Mercedes sedan of Tommasso Romano.

Tommasso jumped out of the back seat and held the door open. I watched as Serena got out as well. She was wearing a white dress and looked up at me with a huge smile on her face. My heart sank. This was the last thing I needed right now.

“Oh, there you are, Antonio,” Tommasso said as he headed toward me, his hand outstretched. He smiled, but the sentiment didn’t reach his eyes.

“Hello, Tommasso.” I nodded. “Serena.”

“Antonio, my darling,” she said as she walked toward us.

“You’re a bit early, aren’t you?” I looked at my watch. “I thought you were coming for dinner?”

“Yes, but I figured we’d come early,” Tommasso said in a deceptively quiet voice. “You’ve postponed it several times now.”

“We had our reasons.”

“I’m sure you did,” Tommasso said. “But I had some work to do with your father, and I figured why not kill two birds with one stone? Serena wanted to show you her new dress. Isn’t it pretty?” He smiled dotingly at his daughter, and then she twirled around in her white dress like a doll on a stick, and I nodded.

“Very beautiful,” I said dutifully. Tommasso looked pleased.

“It’s the same white she’d wear on your wedding day,” he said, and I suppressed a sigh. At that moment, Jimmy and Callie walked out of the house.

“Okay, we’re leaving now, boss,” Jimmy said, his eyes never leaving Tommasso.

I turned toward him, but my eyes watched Callie. She stood behind him, the hurt evident on her face, as she glared at no one in particular.

“And who is this?” Tommasso said, his voice rising slightly as his eyes narrowed. “It cannot be?” He blinked as he walked toward her.

I pressed my lips together and followed him.

“Tommasso, this is Callie. Callie, this is Tommasso Romano. He is my father’s consigliere.”

“Hello,” she said, not extending her hand. Tommasso’s face darkened as he looked at her.

“I feel as if I’ve seen a ghost,” he said. Her eyes widened slightly, and she took a step forward.

“Why is that?” she asked. I, too, wanted to know why Tommasso was acting like that. But then Serena came toward us.

“What is going on?” she said. “Father, I—”

“This is the woman I slept with last night,” I spoke crudely. “In fact, I took her virginity, didn’t I, Callie?”

She gasped at my words. Her eyes widened as her face reddened, and Jimmy grinned at me. Then I noticed the deep, dark, murderous face of Tommasso piercing my soul.

“How dare you disrespect me and my daughter?”

“What are you saying, Antonio?” Serena cried out. “Is this to be your bride?”

“I would never marry him,” Callie said bitterly. “You can have him.”

“But, Papa, you said—” Serena sounded distressed as she flapped her hands around.

Tommasso looked at me and then looked at Serena. He took her arm in his. “Go and sit in the car, darling.”

“But, Papa—”

“Now.”

“Yes, Papa.”
