“I don’t,” he said, shaking his head. “I don’t think that at all. But what I do think and what I do know doesn’t matter in this instance. I understand that you’re upset with me. And I don’t know if there’s ever going to be anything I can do for you to understand, but I just hope that one day you will.”

I pressed my lips together and just stared at him. There was a sadness in his eyes that I’d never seen before, and I wanted to believe what he was saying was true. I wanted to believe he was being sincere.

“I really liked you, Callie.” He touched the side of my face. “I didn’t mean to fall for you. That wasn’t part of the plan.” He sighed. “But I guess sometimes life doesn’t go as we plan, huh?” I stared at him, hating myself for weakening at his touch and thinking that what he was saying was real because I honestly couldn’t tell. He grabbed my hand and placed it on his heart. “You feel that?”

“Feel what?” I said under my breath.

“My heart racing,” he said softly. “It’s racing for you.”

“It is?” I asked. “Whatever. It’s racing because you need it to race for you to live.”

He chuckled then. “So cynical. What have I done to you?”

“I don’t know, Antonio, but I do know that you won’t get to do it again.”

“Well, she looked absolutely devastated,” Alessandro said in a somber voice. “I could tell she’d been crying all day and night.”

I glared at my brother and his facetiousness. I looked back, and I could see Elisabetta smirking.

“What do you find so funny?” I said, glaring at her as well.

“That girl is amazing. I’m so glad she put you in your place.”

“Excuse me?” I raised a single eyebrow as I stared at her.

“Most women fawn over you just because you’re handsome or whatever, but she wanted nothing to do with you. Total girl power. I’d love to be friends with someone like that.”

“Yeah. Well, I guess you’re not going to be seeing as you’re most probably going to be right back in school within a couple of days.”

“No, I’m not,” she said, shaking her head. “I’m not going back there.” She crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes. “And you are not going to make me.”

“Oh, yeah?” I said. “You think I can’t get you to go back to school?”

“You’re not my dad, and you’re certainly not my mom.”

“Your mom is not going to let you…”

“We’ll see,” she said, cutting me off.

“So, exactly what’s going on with Callie and that dude?” Alessandro asked as he nodded to the corner.

I could see Josh laughing at something. I couldn’t see Callie’s face, but I was starting to get angry again.

“Let’s go,” I said.

“But we haven’t even checked out the books. We haven’t…”

“We’re done here,” I said. “Let’s go to Florence’s on Fifth.”

“Okay,” Alessandro said with a nod. “Come on, Elisabetta.”

“I thought I was getting some pizza. I told you—”

“Shut up,” I said.
