I walked into the kitchen, grabbed the pizza that was sitting on the silver tray, and put it into a box.

“Hey, Antonio, that’s for the guest in the corner,” one of the cooks said.

“You’ll just have to make them another one,” I said, grabbing the box and heading back out. “Come on, guys.” I gave the box to Elisabetta. “Here’s your pizza.”

“But I didn’t even get to choose the toppings I wanted. What if—”

“Are you hungry or not?” I asked.

She sighed and pressed her lips together. She opened the box and made a face. “Ew, it has olives on it.”

I looked down at the pizza. “There are only olives on one side. Don’t eat them or pick them off or whatever.”

“Fine,” she said. “Oh, you’re so annoying.”

“Ditto,” I said.

“Ditto?” She shook her head. “Do you know what ditto means?”

“I mean right back at you.”

My brain was flustered after my encounter with Callie and the fact that she was here with Josh. I was pissed, but I knew I couldn’t make a scene. Not if I wanted everything to go according to plan.

“Let’s go,” I said again, striding out of the front, not waiting to see if Alessandro and Elisabetta were following close behind me.

“What the fuck is she thinking?” I said.

I knew there was no way Callie wanted to be with someone like Josh. Not after she’d been with me last night. I’d seen in her eyes that she was falling for me. I’d heard in her voice how hurt she’d been, and yet here she was on a date in a fucking pizzeria that I owned. Was this a fucking joke? Was she trying to take the piss? Though she had no way to know I would show up here tonight as well.

“Calm down, Antonio,” I muttered to myself as I jumped into the car.

There’s no way she could have known I was headed to Melba’s tonight. It was just a coincidence, a horrible coincidence. But now I knew that Callie wasn’t as delicate as I’d taken her for. Now I knew she wasn’t the woman I initially thought she was. Begrudgingly, I respected the fact that she wasn’t at home, lying on her bed, crying her eyes out, thinking about how I’d betrayed her. She was the sort of woman that would be a great Mafia wife if I were ever so inclined. I’d never marry her. That would be an absolute joke, dishonorable to my mother. But if I were to get married, I would want it to be to someone like Callie.

“Thanks for waiting up,” Alessandro said as he got into the car.

Elisabetta had slid into the back seat, munching on some pizza.

“Don’t get any on the seats,” I said, staring at her.

“Whatever. You can get it cleaned if it gets dirty,” she said, an attitude in her voice.

“Your mother should have spanked you when you were a kid.”

“She doesn’t believe in violence,” she said, laughing. “Ironic, huh?”

I shook my head. I didn’t bother to respond.

“Hey, you okay?” Alessandro said, giving me a concerned look. “I know that wasn’t what you expected to see.”

“I don’t care what she does. It just makes everything a little harder.”

“Makes what a little harder?” Elisabetta said. “Who was that girl, anyway?”

“None of your business,” I said.

“Oh, okay. I can find out later. I’ll just ask my mom.”

I pressed my lips together. “Elisabetta, why don’t you concentrate on school and getting your own life instead of—”
