“I’d like to meet the people that made you who you are,” he said.

“It’s just weird to me. I mean, you wanted to meet my sisters. You wanted to meet my friends. I don’t understand why you’re so invested in the people I know.”

“Maybe because I’m kind of invested in you,” he said softly, and I stared into his eyes.

“What?” I said.

He shook his head slightly and rubbed his forehead. “I guess I am investing in you slightly.” He blinked as if the words surprised him as well. “I don’t know what this is between us, but it is magical, in an absolutely crazy way.”

“You think it’s crazy?” I asked him.

“Well, don’t you?” He raised an eyebrow, and I nodded.

“Yeah. If I’m honest, I never expected to be hooking up with the annoying guy in the coffee shop.”

“Yeah, but you have to admit you thought I was kind of cute when you saw me that first time, didn’t you?”

I bit down on my lower lip. “I admit nothing.”

“I saw the way you were checking me out.”

“Yeah, well, you weren’t paying any attention to me. You were too busy on your phone talking to… Who were you talking to, by the way?” I blinked at him.

“Why does it matter?” he asked.

“Because it sounded like you were on a business call,” I said. “A very important business call. But if you’re a professor, what business call would you have been on? Or was it part of the plan?”

“It was part of the plan.” He nodded quickly. “I wanted you to think I was a businessman.”

“Wow. You really put a lot of thought into how you were going to deceive me.”

“Well, I wasn’t deliberately trying to deceive you. I was just looking for…”

“For what?” I asked him.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I don’t really know how to explain this entire thing.”

“Yeah, I guess you wouldn’t,” I said.

“You guys ready?” Chelsea said, looking at her watch. She had a slightly irritated tone.

“What’s going on?” I asked her. “We can leave now, you know?”

“Yeah. I’m just fed up of looking at you two making lovey-dovey eyes at each other,” she said, rolling her eyes. “I mean, come on. Yesterday you were at each other’s necks and now you’re acting like you’re in love.”

“We’re not in love,” I said quickly. “We’re just…”

“I don’t know what you two are doing, but it is nauseating,” she said. “Right, girls?”

“I think it’s kind of cute,” Molly said, and Polly just shrugged.

“I mean, I don’t know what to think, if I’m honest. I just think I’m still very confused as to what’s going on between you two.”

Finn started chuckling. “Well, it’s a good thing that it doesn’t really matter what you two think, isn’t it?”

“Wow, that was cold,” Chelsea said. I smiled at Finn, and then I looked at my sister.

“We’re still trying to figure this out as well. We really don’t need you in our business.”
