“But I kind of feel like…”

“What?” he said as I paused.

“I kind of feel like you take away from the beautiful comment when you mention kooky and weird.”

“Maybe I like kooky and weird.”

“Okay, so are you trying to tell me you’re into my sisters and not me?”

“No. I’m trying to tell you that you’re the kookiest and weirdest of them all.”

“That’s not a compliment, Finn.”

“Okay, then. Should I say you’re the most beautiful belle of the ball?”

“Seeing as I’ve never been to a ball, that would be a lie.”

“What if I said you are one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever met in my life?”

“Then I’d say you haven’t met many women,” I said, shaking my head, even though his compliment made me feel warm inside.

“I’ve met many, many women, and not one of them has been like you, Harriet Campbell, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.” He reached over, grabbed my hand, and squeezed. “I just want you to know that no matter how this started, I didn’t anticipate any of this happening. And what I feel for you, it’s real.” His voice lowered. “It makes it more complicated for sure, but it’s definitely real.”

“And what is it you feel for me, Finn?”

“Well, you already know I’m sexually attracted to you.”

“Yeah, but you don’t have to feel something for someone to be sexually attracted to them.”

“And I think you’re funny.”

“Uh-huh.”

“And I think you’re smart.”

“Uh-huh.”

“And I think you’re talented, and I think you’re loving, and I think your relationship with your sisters and Molly is awesome.”

“Okay, but what’s that got to do with us?”

“Maybe I need something like that in my life,” he said softly.

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t know.” He shook his head. “I really don’t know.”

I glanced at him as he drove and tried to figure him out. Then realized he was driving as if he knew exactly where he was going. “Hey.”

“Yeah?” he said.

“How’d you know where you’re going?”

“What do you mean?”

“I haven’t given you the address to my parents’ place, but you’re going the right way.”

“I figured it must be this direction, but I didn’t really know where I was going. I figured you would tell me if I was going the wrong way.”
