“Oh, okay,” I said. “Well, you’re going to make a right on Main Street.”

“Okay.” He nodded, smiling at me. “Thanks.”

“You’re welcome, I think.” I sat back in the seat and studied his profile as he drove. He really was handsome, and he was an enigma to me. I didn’t understand who he was as a person, but I liked that. I liked that there were layers of his personality to peel back. That he wasn’t telling me what he thought I wanted to hear. I liked that he was being honest and that he didn’t just give me compliments all the time or try to gaslight me or put me down. There was just something so refreshing about Finn Joseph. I never would’ve believed I’d think such a thing, but there was.

I didn’t know where this was going. I didn’t know if it would become a relationship or what. I didn’t know how it would work if I started dating my boss. Would I still be able to work for him? How would that dynamic work? But I didn’t want to question it just yet. I didn’t want to question anything. I just wanted to live in the moment, which was what I’d been doing.

“I’ve made a right on Main,” he said, breaking me out of my reverie. “Now what?”

“We’ll go down about three miles,” I said, “and then we’ll make a left on Palm Tree Drive.”

“Okay,” he said, smiling. “Are you nervous for me to meet your parents?”

“No,” I said. “I mean, I’m slightly nervous for them to find out I lost my job and all the rest of it, but I’m not worried about them meeting you. I think they’ll like you.”

“Good,” he said. “I hope they do.”

“Yeah,” I said. His phone started ringing, and he frowned slightly.

“Do you mind if I take this?”

“It’s fine.” He put it on speakerphone.

“Hello, this is Finn speaking.”

“Hello, sir. This is Benedict.”

“Ah, Benedict. I tried calling you earlier.”

“Yes, sir. Sorry, I was just having some tea and missed your call.”

“I’m going over to Ms. Campbell’s parents’ house, and I was wondering if you could come by?”

“Oh, certainly, sir. Is it because of—”

“Yes,” Finn said quickly and looked at me. “Come in about an hour.”

“Yes, sir. Will do. Have a good day.”

“You, too, Benedict. Thank you.” He hung up, and I frowned as I stared at him.

“Why is Benedict coming to my parents’ house?”

“Because if we drink, I don’t want to drink and drive.”

“I don’t even know if my parents will have any alcohol. My mom doesn’t really drink, and my dad enjoys a beer every now and then, but he barely remembers to buy it, and my mom doesn’t buy it for him.”

“So then maybe Benedict won’t have to drive us back, but I’d rather be safe than sorry.”

“Okay.” I tilted my head to the side. “If you say so.”

“Why? Do you not want him to come to your parents’ house, as well?”

“I mean, the man got his flirt on with me last night.” I shook my head. “I kind of don’t want to see him for a while.”

“But that was because I asked him.”

“I know he was doing it because you wanted me to come to your room, but I’m still kind of creeped out. Like, he’s a better actor than I would’ve given him credit for because when he looked at my lips when he was talking about a massage, I shivered slightly. I really believed that’s what he wanted.”
