My jaw dropped. “Are you freaking kidding me right now?”

“He’s not,” my mother interjected, and I just glared at her.

“Okay, so you got me fired.”

“Yes. Well, Charlotte was kind of in on it as well.”

“What do you mean she was in on it?”

“I told her that she’d need to fire you for this to work.”

“What? Why?”

“Because I needed to hire you.”

“What do you mean you needed to hire me?” I shook my hair. “I don’t get it.”

“Do you remember when you were in the coffee shop, Charlotte handed you the newspaper on your way out and said something like, ‘Maybe you’ll find a new job here’?”

“Oh my gosh, yes,” I said. “But how would she know which job I was going to apply to?”

“True,” he said, nodding. “But then, do you remember you were on the phone with your mother later the next day, I believe, and she made a comment to you?”

“No. I remember she was going on and on about getting divorced from Dad and… Hold on,” I said. “I was going through the ads, and I did mention a well-paying housekeeping position. I said I wasn’t going to apply for it because I wouldn’t make a good housekeeper. But then—”

“What?” Finn said with a smirk.

“But then Mom said apply for it anyway, just to see.” I stared at her in shock. “Oh my gosh, Mom, you set me up.”

“I wasn’t setting you up, darling. I just wanted to ensure that you’d have an inheritance.”

I shook my head and rolled my eyes. “So it was a setup, this whole thing? When I applied for the job and spoke to Gladys, and—”

“Gladys was an actress.” Finn smirked. “In fact, so is Benedict.”

“They’re actors?” My jaw dropped. “What?”

“Yes, it was just all part of the plan. I needed to see if you’d be attracted to me. I needed to see if no matter how much of a jerk I was, you would still want to be with me in some way.”

“Mom and Dad, did you pimp me out to sell this?”

“What are you talking about?” my father said, his brows furrowed. “We just wanted to see if you would want to be around Finn, and you taking the job and staying there when you absolutely hate housekeeping was proof of that.”

“And when we kissed?”

“You kissed?” my mom said. “Oh, we didn’t know that.”

I looked at Finn, my face flushed. “They don’t know that we kissed?”

“That wasn’t part of it,” he said, his eyes dancing with glee.

“And the other stuff?” I said lightly, but my parents overheard.

“What other stuff? What’s going on? What are you talking about?” my mother asked as she walked over to me. “I didn’t know there was going to be other stuff. You just said you needed to see if the cologne attracted someone that obviously didn’t like you. And I said my daughter hates housework and that she would make a horrible housekeeper and she didn’t like it when men were rude to her, so if she still wanted to be in your employ, it would be proof.”

“And I got that proof,” he said, smiling widely.

“You set me up.” I gawked at him. “This was all a test and a joke to you just to see if I’d be attracted to some stupid cologne.”
