“Proof of what?” I shouted.
“Now, now, Harriet,” my father said dotingly. “No need to be rude to your mother.”
“I’m not being rude to my mother. I’m just really frustrated right now. What is going on?”
“Yeah, Mom and Dad, you need to tell us what’s going on,” Chelsea said.
“So, Daddy created a cologne.”
“Okay,” I said. “What’s that got to do with anything?”
“It attracts women to men,” my father said, tapping his beard thoughtfully.
“What?” I said.
“It’s a man attractor,” my mom said, giggling as she held on to my dad’s arm.
“What are you talking about?”
“Man attractor.”
“I thought you two were getting a divorce. Why are you two so lovey-dovey now?”
“Well, we’re not getting divorced. Not really,” my mom said. “Oh darling, please tell Harriet.”
“I think I should continue,” Finn said, looking over at my parents. “If you don’t mind.”
“Go ahead,” my father said. “I’d be happy for you to take the lead.”
“So your father created a cologne that attracts women to men.”
I stared at him. “Continue.”
“And he went to a local university and spoke to some scientists, one of which was Dr. Post.”
“Oh my gosh,” I said, rolling my eyes. “I knew Dr. Post had to be involved in this somehow.”
“I knew Dr. Post in the past,” he said. “He came to me, and he said this could be a billion-dollar revolutionary idea. Every man in the world wants to be able to attract women to them.”
“Okay,” I said. “I still don’t get it.”
“But, obviously, I needed to see it in action. I needed it to work.”
“Okay.”
“So your mother suggested that I use the cologne and then try to attract a woman that is repelled by me.”
I stared at him. “Okay, and…”
“I went into the coffee shop that day because your mother told me that you worked there.”
“Oh my God.” My heart started racing. “So you came into the coffee shop on purpose.”
He nodded slightly.
“And you were an asshole on purpose.”
“Yes,” he said. “I needed you to absolutely detest me. I needed you to not have any interest in me so that when I used the cologne, I could see if it attracted you.”
