“I don’t know what they are, but these are the softest sheets I’ve ever laid on in my life. These are sheets that make you want to go to bed.”
“You know what you should do?” she said.
“No. What?”
“You should sleep in those sheets naked.”
“What? Why would I do that?”
“Because, girl, they’re fine material. Do you know how amazing a wonderful, soft, silky material will feel next to your naked skin?”
“No, because I’ve never slept naked. Is there something you want to tell me, Chelsea?”
“No. I just think it sounds like it would be absolutely amazing.”
“Okay. Well, I don’t know. I do have my pajamas.”
“Just one night. Try it. Who knows? You might like it.”
“Yeah, maybe.”
“And who knows? Maybe, just maybe, it will make you think of—”
“I don’t even want to hear what you have to say,” I said. “Good night, Chelsea.”
“Night, Harriet.”
“And thanks for calling. It means a lot.”
“You’re welcome. Don’t tell Polly I told you, by the way.”
“I won’t,” I said, then hung up the phone. I got off the bed and walked to the bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth. My phone started ringing then. I wasn’t surprised to see it was Polly.
“Hey, sis,” she said.
“Hey,” I said, looking at my reflection in the mirror.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“I was just about to brush my teeth.”
“Cool. In that fancy big bathroom of yours?”
“Yep. It’s amazing.”
“So did Chelsea call you?”
“Yeah, she did. Thank you, Polly.”
“She told you, didn’t she?”
“You knew she would tell me.”
“I know,” she said. “Chelsea can’t keep anything a secret.”
“But I’m glad she called, and I’m glad you still called anyway.”
“You know I love you, Harriet. And you know that even though I support you in anything and everything that you do, if it doesn’t work out, you can come and stay with me.”
