I looked around for bread. I saw whole wheat bread, and I saw French baguettes, and then I saw English muffins. “Oh, yes, the eggs go on English muffins,” I said. I was starting to feel hungry. I grabbed my phone again.

“Oh my God. What is it?” Polly said. “I’m leaving right now.”

“Can you make sure to get two of everything?”

“What? Why? He’s that hungry?”

“No, but I’m hungry, and after going through all this, I want eggs Benedict, too.”

“Oh you have got to be joking. Harriet, are you absolutely ridiculous right now?”

“What?”

“I do not have money to buy two sets of eggs Benedict and hash browns.”

“Just use the emergency credit card that Mom and Dad gave us.”

“But that’s for emergencies.”

“Don’t worry. I will give you the money to pay it off.”

“Fine, but if I get in trouble, I’m telling them exactly what’s going on.”

“Polly, we said we weren’t going to tell Mom and Dad about this job.”

“I know you don’t want them to know that you’re a housekeeper, but if I get in trouble—”

“Fine,” I said. “Whatever. Just get the stuff.”

“Okay.”

“Bye.” I hung up quickly.

“Hey, is everything okay?” Finn walked back into the kitchen.

I swallowed hard. “Yeah, everything is absolutely fantastic,” I said.

“Okay. I am just not smelling anything yet, and I thought you’d have the potatoes boiling or baking or however you make them.”

“Oh, I haven’t gotten to that part yet,” I said. “Don’t be overeager, Finn.”

He stared at me with a raised eyebrow. “This isn’t going to be done in ten minutes, is it?”

“No.”

“This is taking a lot longer than I thought it would.” He seemed as if he felt unsure of my capabilities.

“Well, it’s because I’ve never worked in your kitchen before, Finn. A chef has to get to know their kitchen, and I don’t know this kitchen. Once I get to know your kitchen a little bit better, I will whip up dishes in half the time.”

“Okay,” he said. “I like the sound of that. By the way, what are you making for lunch?”

“Um, I don’t know. BLTs?”

“BLTs,” he said. “That’s it?”

“Why? You want more than a BLT?”

“Yeah. What about a Caesar salad, a Cobb salad, and the BLT, and some potato salad.”
